After 100+ rental experiences with different companies, this is the worst. You know the look of renter when you don't want extra insurance? The look that says "were going to get you for something..."? I am always careful therefore, even photo documenting cars before I leave. But this time there was an existing scratch UNDER the car that I obviously hadn't checked, which I have 3 witnesses in the car did not happen during the rental. But, since I didn't crawl under the car and pointed out this scratch on the black plastic under the number, they charged me for damages. In their contact with me, they effectively call me a liar.
SO, if you end up using Hertz anyway, make sure to check and document status even UNDER the car. And set aside time to go back to the company to meticulously point out every little existing scratch. Insist on video documenting the whole thing, since their main business idea seems to be to charge people for damages that they have not inflicted responsible for, as long as they miss documenting them at checkout. It all seems like part of "teaching" the customers to buy the overpriced insurance they sell.
I will never use them again and recommend everyone to avoid Hertz.
