We’ve just had a really bad experience when trying to donate furniture and household goods to BHF at Mitcham. I had told them we couldn’t say exactly what would be going as friends and family would be taking some of it but I gave as much of a list as possible to the pleasant lady on the phone when I booked the van. I listed all the large items such as beds and had everything clean and organised in one room when they arrived. One of the drivers was extremely unpleasant and strutted around saying he only worked to his list. He refused a perfectly good single bed due to a barely visible ‘stain’ on the mattress which we would have rubbed off had we noticed it as it would have come off easily. All of the other goods were clean and good quality. He took them in the end, we were his last stop and the van was virtually empty, therefore why all the fuss??
However we are now left thinking we would never donate goods to a charity ever again and in future we would offer them ourselves to individuals for free who might need them and may appreciate the gesture more than the unpleasant attitude we encountered. It was an extremely unpleasant experience and one we don’t intend to repeat.
