Having a CARFAX subscription definitely saved me from buying a bad car with a bad history. During my search, there were more than one incidents, where the seller would either feign ignorance about the history of the car, or refuse to share the details. I usually backed off whenever I did not get info on the car's history, but there were a few occasions where I really liked the car so much that I did not want to let it go just because the seller had no info on it's history. On those occasions, I went to CARFAX for more details, and I am glad that I did. I came across reports that had accidents involving the front end of the car, or an odometer inconsistency, or a bad title, that would make me put my foot on the break pedal in that deal. I would recommend that if someone is serious about buying a used car, then CARFAX is a must, as it serves as a preliminary check on the history of the car and could save thousands in the long run. One can also negotiate the deal based on the history of the car. There is just one drawback that I wish could be overcome in the future. I wish that the CARFAX report shows more details on the accidents that could help the subscriber determine the extent of the damage caused by an accident. But even without that, it serves as a great pointer on the value of the car.
