We were in the market for a car to replace a 22 year old truck. One day, while out of town for a sports event, we saw the car we thought we wanted for sale at the side of the road. It looked to be in pretty good shape and drove well. It had a few minor issues including a missing dash piece that the seller assured us was missing due to being cracked (a common issue with this type of car) and a replacement had been order and was on its way. The rest of the issues seemed minor and so we thought this was the one. To be sure, I downloaded the CarFax app on my phone and purchased a plan and checked the car's VIN. A quick scan of the results seemed to indicate everything was ok and so we decided to agree on a price and purchase it. We had the cash to buy it right then but the owner didn't have the title with him. Long story short, we agreed on the price and he was going to deliver the car after the weekend and we would pay then. We drove home a little disappointed that we weren't in the "new" car but looking forward to seeing it again in a couple of days. When we got home, I logged onto the CarFax website to read a few more details about the vehicle. As I read closer, it turns out I had overlooked one thing - the odometer had been rolled back about 30,000 miles! Needless to say, I got in touch with the seller right away and let him know this wasn't the one for us and said a prayer of thanks for CarFax. As we had purchased the "Unlimited" plan, we were able to check out a few other cars before eventually finding a winner. While the cost of that plan made us hesitate initially, we definitely got our money's worth from it in that first experience and are thankful for this great car-shopping service.
