While Carfax is a good tool to add to the car purchase toolbox it may be causing consumers to lose value on their vehicles unnecessarily. Particularly the “Damage” category which lacks enough detail to show if just a plastic bumper cover was scratched and scuffed needing cosmetic repair or if the vehicle hit or was hit by something requiring mechanical repair in addition to cosmetics. Meaning that a car with cosmetic damage (Shopping cart scuffs or parking garage pole) takes a big hit against its resale value which may not be commensurate with the extent of the damage.
