When buying an older vehicle, a buyer wants to be sure that it's not been stolen, that there are no legal outstanding debt problems and that the seller is entitled to sell it. The DVLA provides some free services, but outstanding issues are not included. I have had an old motor cycle sitting in my shed for years, and when a prospective buyer turned up I felt that I needed to show that everything was above board. There had been some uncertainty about its MoT status, so I got a DVLA statement that cleared up any issues about ownership and its SORN status. But I wanted to reassure my buyer that there were no other little hidden traps and catches that might catch him out later, once he's restored the bike and wants to pout it back on the road. So I bought a UK Vehicle Gold Check. The first thing to note was that it provided a lot of information that the DVLA statement had already given me. You may regard this as redundant info - I prefer to see it as confirmation of the most important matters - ownership and my right to sell, and details about the year of manufacture (crucial fora classic bike) and its engine size, etc. But the Gold Report gave me some info that the DVLA does not provide, on outstanding finance matters (clear),whether it had even been reported stolen to the police or insurers (no), and not written off. But it DID warn that the bike had been imported - I knew that because the previous owner told me that he'd imported it - but not many other people knew that! And it warned me to check the VIN number, engine number (not stated on the log book), and whether the Log Book I was providing was the most recent one (it is, but it's dated back to 2010) So that gave my buyer plenty of confirmation that he was buying a clean machine with no hidden ties. Where the Gold Report appeared to fall behind was in the sections on vehicle information, Ownership info, and engine specifications. But since these aren't recorded in the Log Book anyway, that's not surprising! Overall, an excellent back-up service to confirm existing free DVLA facilities, with the added security of checking for dodgy issues that aren't included in the DVLA reports. I didn't need to use this UK Vehicle search service, but at a tenner it's given my buyer all the assurance that he needs to buy with confidence. And that's what's worth forking out the extra. Nice one, guys!
