Dr Eberhard Kornotzki
Each time I look at this watch (the new Trident 600 with the ceramic red bezel, 38mm version), it brings a smile to my face. The workmanship is outstanding and the watch is a joy to behold. There are a few points though, in order of importance, that I would love to see improved in a future version: 1) The thickness of the watch case is out of proportion on the 38mm version. I'd have traded the 600 meter water resistance for reduced case thickness, e.g. below 10mm. Who needs 600 meters anyway. On a demanding dive (i.e. deeper than 30 meters), I'd take a digital dive computer and leave the watch behind. I once took a GMT master on a dive and due to current, I banged it against a rock and scratched it. So I'm quite sure I wouldn't take my shiny Christopher Ward on dives if there was a good chance of scratching it. 2) The GMT design isn't very practical - in order to change local time, one needs to pull out the crown all the way and turn the clock forward to dial in the new local time, then push it in a click to adjust the GMT hand and after that possibly the date. It would make way more sense to make the hour hand quick adjustable and have the GMT hand move with the regular minute/hour movement of the watch. It would then be a simple thing to just click the hour hand back or forth when arriving in a new time zone (obscure offsets of 30 minutes excluded, but these are impossible to adjust to in the current configuration also). 3) The backplate on my copy isn't lined up properly, the tip of the trident points to the 10 o'clock position rather than to the 12 o'clock position. Sales told me it wasn't possible to make the thread gearing to have it line up correctly. I believe, however, that with proper machining the exact position could be ensured and fine tuned. Of course this requires skill and engineering finesse and possibly a change in the manufacturing workflow. 4) Had there been a quartz version of this watch with a ceramic bezel, I'd have gone for that instead, regardless of pricing concerns. A quartz version also could be made thinner than a mechanical one. Other than that, I feel Christopher Ward cares about his clients - I can tell from the way and frequency the company reaches out. Very happy with this!
