I bought a bike through the ride to work scheme. when it arrived I was at work, the courier simply left the box, wrong way up, on my driveway. luckily it was still there when I got home. put the bike together pumped the tyres and set of for work a couple of days later. upon riding it became clear that the gears had not been set up properly so were clicking during the ride and when i changed gear top the top end they began jumping back to other gears of their own volition. the brakes had also been set so tight that the wheels struggled to go round so i had to loosen them with the lever. 3 mins into the ride the back wheel punctured, I fell off. I replaced the back inner tube and continued my ride to work. on 2 occasions the quick release on the front wheel shook loose, luckily I notice both times and tightened it ( I have ridden quick release wheels for 30yrs and am fully aware of how they work); I was riding slowly after the tyre and gears issues. when I contacted evans I was told that I could not return the bike as they have a 'repair, replace, refund' policy. I was asked it I could take it to an evans shop, which would take at least an hour to drive too (2hr round trip). I was then offered a collection, although they could not give a specific time or even a general time, I would only know the day and collection between 9am and 6pm, I was also told the collection would only be to repair the bike and that I would not be able to get a refund. I do realise I have ridden the bike, however I would not have know the issues had I not ridden it. the bike was of a satisfactory quality and arguably dangerous to ride. This was a bike originally priced at £1000, admittedly it was in the sale, however only because of its year of manufacture not because of any issues. I am now unable to return a bike I don't want and am stuck in with the option of a new bike needing to be repaired before it was ridden (still can't get my head around that one), or replacement, which to be honest I don't want because the service has been so poor. having to find someone who can wait in all day for it to be picked up. I would strongly recommend not using evans because when things are not right there is no way to cancel the RTW scheme contract. I have added my order number here but if I am contacted I am sure I will receive the same pointless line of 'we repair first...' It is a new bike and shouldn't need repairing!
