As if doing the 4-day Inca Trail weren’t enough, my boyfriend and I also decided on a whim that we wanted to squeeze in a day trip to hike up Rainbow Mountain before we left Peru. We were so exhausted, but encouraged by our guide Rudi, that it would be worth it. I am so glad we listened to him! The day started early, 5am, and we got to the mountain by about 8am. It was a windy, strenuous hike up, but stunning with the scenery and the colors. Our guide for this hike, Wilbert, explained the geological phenomenon that has resulted in the unique layering of colors on the mountain. Evolution provided us a nice box lunch which we enjoyed at the summit. It was a very full day after a very full week, but I am so glad we took Rudi’s advice to check out this natural wonder before heading home. There is so much more to Peru than Machu Picchu, and I can’t wait to return to discover more!
