I had tried to find a piano teacher without using the service, but the choice was limited and in the end didn't give me the options I wanted. Although at first I balked at the need to pay for an introduction, in the end I realised this is a small amount compared to the amount you would pay out in lessons and gave me a good set of choices of who I could choose.
The process is still slightly random because of the limitations of choosing someone from the information they provide about themselves, but in my case it seems to have worked out fine.
