I am comparing Jimmy Joy to Huel here. I have tried all of Huel black edition flavours and previously had been having a Huel shake almost every day as breakfast for about 8 months or so. I got a bit worn out on flavours so decided to try JJ.
First of all the name is cumbersome - not great branding. Is Huel much better? It's grown on me. Does it matter? Not much, but it's much harder to tell people what I'm having when I have to say a Plenny shake or Jimmy Joy, it's just a bit weird, so I still just call it Huel. Sorry folks.
Initially I liked the flavours, but after trying three (pistachio, apple cinnamon, vanilla) I kind of find the flavour profile between them only very subtly different, whereas Huel flavours are quite distinct from each other. I liked all three, but I can feel it becoming samey already.
Texture wise, JJ wins. It really is easier to mix and produce a lump free consistency. I use a milk frother to mix and I only have to go a few seconds for a good blend. I was impressed here and it's a clear winner, smooth and not bitty at all, which is my preference.
Filling wise, well Huel as far as I understood, called for 500ml liquid. JJ calls for 300ml. I usually do half oat milk half water. So topping up to 500ml with JJ I also added a bit more powder to keep the consistency right. 300ml and two scoops definitely did not keep me going as long as 500ml and two scoops of Huel, and if I'm honest even matching the amounts I'm not feeling as full as with Huel. But it still carries me from 9am to 12pm and I'm not absolutely starving for lunch by then.
The shaker - nope, I don't like it. The lid has hard to clean recesses that you'll need a long bristle to get to, to keep it sanitary. This is where the basket thing sits. So once again I ended up using the Huel shaker because it's easier to clean. It's not perfect either, but ease of cleaning is important to me. Also, it was hard to read the measurements on the plenny shaker, whereas with the Huel I know filling up to the H is 250, and the L is 500, that's a little hack I figured out so it's probably not fair on Plenny but even so it's just a quality of life thing.
Delivery also took a while. I am trying to become less reliant on this "I want it now" Amazon culture but being a forgetful person I can see this being an issue if I run out and want more, I'll be waiting about a week on delivery, I could be overestimating that though.
Overall, I do like the Plenny shakes, and I'll continue to have at least one flavour in stock so I don't get tired of either. I enjoy the benefits of this type of food - the ease, the knowledge I'm getting everything I need, and the price. I highly recommend trying it out. I have been quite harsh but it's got a lot to live up to as I'm regrettably a certified Hueligan and I never thought that would happen to me but here we are.
I might do something truly dastardly. I might mix Huel and Plenny together... 😈
Oh and one more thing. I got the most potent terrible farts switching to Plenny from Huel. It's calmed down a bit now but it's still not great, my girlfriend has not been impressed.
