Maddy
My initial correspondence with this company was positive. I was looking for reclaimed wood to attach some brackets to to make some shelves. The guy I spoke to was wonderful and polite, and he said that if I ordered a longer piece of wood, then they could cut it down into different sizes if I specified the lengths in the order details. This seemed straightforward and very helpful, and so, after my husband and I had moved house, I was convinced to make the purchase. I had accidentally given my husband’s number, so I rung them up to correct this, and, again, the customer service guy was very polite and helpful. He informed me that FedEx would deliver my wood the next day. They didn’t. What I did get, however, was a very bizarre phone call from a man who constantly referred to me as ‘Madeleen’- I had to correct him several times (he later admitted in an email that it doesn’t bother him when he mispronounces customers names). This guy told me that they were going to do the work, but he told them not to, because of the extra work involved, and he needed to charge more for it. I would normally file this under ‘fair enough’, but he was so rude and antagonistic right from the get go, and I really think that they should have made this clear on their website. (He also seemed to be oddly penny pinchy, in a later email he went on about how much I should have been charged). He kept on trying to convince me to give them another £25 to finish off the edges- I declined, as the wood was going inbetween two plaster walls, and the edges wouldn’t be visible. This seemed to anger him more. I waited another week for my order, having had no further correspondence, they wouldn’t even provide a tracking number. Now that it’s arrived, it’s covered in sawdust, and the work around the edges that were finished doesn’t seem worth the £25 he wanted to charge me. I later found out that the man I spoke to was called Stewart, and he co-owns the company with a man called James. I see other people reference James on here, I haven’t had any interaction with him, but Stewart is a thoroughly unpleasant human being, and his company is breaking at least a couple of trading standards laws. He needs to learn that business isn’t just about taking money, but everything is interconnected- how you treat you customers, and indeed, your minimum wage contract staff, will ultimately come back to bite you. Don’t think that trading standards have been ignoring reports, just because they haven’t acted yet.
