This has to be my worst ever experience of buying online.
I purchased a Parcel Box 500 from this dreadful company. When I purchased it I was asked the question "why did you choose postbox shop". I responded to say that they had responded quickly to my query (which they had) and that the product looked like it would meet my needs.
I ordered it on a Thursday. They sent the box quickly and it arrived the next day. All happy.
After installing it outside my property on the Sunday, on the Monday my postman knocked to ask if that's where I wanted mail delivered from now on. I said yes and he responded to say it was not secure and he could get his hand in. I told him that was ridiculous as it was advertised as secure and sent him on his way.
The next day he knocked again and said the same thing and urged me to try myself.
That evening I tried with a friend and sure enough if you bend your arm you can get your arm right into the box. We were able to post and retrieve various items including a large purse and wallet.
I could not believe that there could be so many good reviews when the product had such a flaw so went back to the website to see what I had missed. Then on the webste was a "review" displaying my full name and the date of purchase of the box and showing the statement I made about why I chose the seller. It also had a 5 star rating above my review.
At no point during the purchasing process had I been asked if I was happy for my name to be displayed on their site, or for my "review" to be displayed, nor was I asked about how many stars I would give.
I contacted postboxshop about both the faulty box and the review and received nonsensical and rude correspondence back from a male representative. I was told my postman needed to get a new job and that no one else had complained. I pointed out that I wasn't to know if others had complained as their reviews are fake. Postboxshop then stated I could have a refund as a goodwill gesture as long as it was returned in a resellable condition. It was only in this later correspondence that he reluctantly agreed to remove my fake review and name from his website.
The box was hanging off the wall on my front lawn so hardly resellable and would also cost a fortune to return which he said should be at my expense! I said I'd report to trading standards and he had the audacity to tell me that if I had enough time to waste I could refer the matter to whoever I wanted but that I must show them his terms and conditions which are on the website.
I even went as far as sending postboxshop a video of us posting a purse and retrieving it from the top of the box. The video is 14 seconds long so that's how long it'll take someone to steal your mail out of that thing. Unsurpisngly the cocky replies stopped then and I didn't get any reply at all from him after that.
I contacted Consumer Advice who advised me they would refer on to trading standards who will be investigating both the box and the seller's website with regards to reviews and misleading customers. They advised me that it was the seller's responsibility to refund the item and pay for return postage as a result of their failure to provide the item as described. They also said it didn't have to be in a resellable condition as they didn't want him selling this poor product again. Interestingly, Consumer Advice also told me that the vendor had broken the law by not sending his precious terms and conditions in a "durable format". Apparently this little known piece of legislation gives consumers even more rights to return goods but I did find it ironic given that he had referred me to the ts and cs in the first place. Not to mention the fact the ts and cs say nothing about giving them the right to display fake reviews or send faulty goods.
If you read the reviews with this review in mind you can see that all the other "5 star" ratings are responding to the same question I was. I thought that having received this request from this website to leave a review that perhaps postboxshop seen the error of their ways about displaying fake reviews on their website but unfortunately they are still there.
I reported the matter to paypal who were absolutely brilliant. The people I spoke with on the phone were disgusted with the way postboxshop behaved. They facilitated the retun and gave me my return postage back. I received the refund immediately after I notified them that the postage tracking showed it had been delivered.
I also contacted the manufacturer and sent them the video. They have promised a replacement which will be built rectifying the fault but whether that will materialise who knows.
For what it's worth, if you were putting these boxes up high where your postman could just about reach to drop stuff in then you will probably be ok as a theif would need a bit of leverage and to be able to bend their arm but I'd save yourself the hassle and go to a reputable company with good customer services instead, rather than this outfit.
UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO MANAGER RESPONSE:
No where on the postboxshop.com website does it say the height that this box needs to be placed. If it needs to be a certain height to match their description of "secure" then the website needs to be changed. I do find this bizarre because it has holes at the bottom where it's designed to be installed on the ground as well as wall mounted.
I did not provide any consent for any "review" to be placed on the website. When pressed in email correspondence the company did not provide any proof that I had consented to the "review" or that I had given 5 stars. The review was dated the day I purchased the product. I had not received the product before the review was placed. It was a review of the company, not the product but was displayed, like many others, as a review of the product.
The manufacturer has not made a parcel box just for me. They've accepted that their product has a design fault and a new design needs to be made. Still, postboxshop are selling the same model without any mention of the fact that it needs to be mounted high.
Postboxshop.com did not have any say on whether I got a refund. It was settled by paypal who also gave me a refund for my postage out of their own funds as compensation.
