PH tester arrived with the electrode surrounded by crystals instead of storage liquid. Presumably the crystals were dried storage liquid. I read that the electrodes only last 2 years and must be kept wet in the correct solution, so it looks as if this PH meter may have been on the shelf for too long and had its life reduced by drying out.
I emailed Rapid Electronics asking for an explanation but 11 days have passed and no reply received - shoddy.
