A word of warning to all. I was a long standing customer with Scottish Power and was paying an agreed direct debit of £43.69 per month. Scottish Power then decided to take £1567.96 from my account. They were contacted. ”they said oops don’t know what happened, but won’t happen again”. They then raised an in-house complaint for me. Then even though an official complaint was ongoing they did the same again on two other occasions. I then referred it to the ombudsman letting Scottish Power know. Their response was to try and take £1567.96 from my account again. After I had left SP for another supplier they decided to contact me again and offered a small sum to be credited to my account. They didn’t seem to know my account was closed. The ombudsman was just as bad. They agreed with SP and then they offered me a very slight increase, saying they would have SP credit my account, even after I had told the ombudsman that I had closed my account.
My main argument with SP and the Ombudsman was if this had happened to a person on a low income, fortunately I had enough in my account so my DD’s and s/o’s weren’t cancelled, or somebody elderly the repercussions of the company’s actions could be horrendous.
