I successfully used 64-bit Win7 Professional DVD to upgrade a Lenovo 3000 N200 running 32-bit Vista Ultimate. The best way to do this is to create a bootable USB stick (min 4GB) and just copy all the files on the DVD across to it. Also acquire a Win7 version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver and expand it on to a folder on the USB stick. Reset the boot sequence on the laptop so that it will load from the USB stick first.
I used the Microsoft Win7 compatibility checker and the guidance arising from that for custom installation.
The method of creating the bootable USB stick is also available from Microsoft via this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/234.how-to-deploy-windows-7-from-a-usb-drive.aspx and there is a video here (ignore the 'Not available' message and just click either the WMV or MP4 link lower down the page!): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/installing-win7-using-a-usb-stick
You don't need to worry about ISO images or anything complicated like that.
All the hardware works fine, you can get updated drivers for the graphics card and fingerprint reader quite easily from vendor websites. I have encountered no follow-on problems, but the PC now thinks it's a Dell! I expect this approach will work for most laptops of a similar vintage (2007) and specification.
