For anyone practicing endurance sports True North products are of special interest. The fraction of seeds and nuts in their cereals is not just higher than in other products: the fraction is much higher. The seeds and nuts do not simply improve the flavor or make the texture more interestiong. They provide protein and healthy fats that the gut digests more slowly, resulting in a 'phased delivery' of the components of the cereal over a span of three or four hours. Basically there are 3 parts to the cereal. There are sugars (apple juice) which the body takes in immediately. There are complex carbohydrates (oats) which are available later, and there are the proteins and fats (seeds & nuts), which are available in a few hours. If you are going to row, run or ski over a span of four hours or longer, my experience is that neither do I get hungry, nor do I have to think about supplemental nutrition during that time. And this lets me focus on my sport. The True North cereals are complicated products formulated almost without regard to cost, and so they are expensive. This said, almost all of the similar products do not even come close to these recipes as a nutritional platform for endurance sports.
