First of all I have to admit that I might not be the right person to compose an unbiased review on IronKeys. The reason for that is that I love these drives and have been using them extensively since May 2008...all five of them. After initialisation they supposed to be genuinely cross-platform devices but I only used them on Macs without any issues all. The various certifications for encryption strength, operating shock resistance and temperatures as well as temper proofing is somewhat meaningless to me as there is no easy and effective way for mere mortal end users like myself to check and verify them. I am certainly not going to test the input of ten incorrect passwords which would reset the drive in an attempt to protect it from brut force attack. I guess I just trust these data blindly as listed on the manufacturer's Data Sheets. But hey if these drives are good enough for the US DoD and NATO forces to be used and deployed in military conflicts it should be good enough for me too. I have read on various forums that these devices either, water repellent, water resistant, or water proof. I am not sure about that either but I certainly would not include them in my scuba gear.
Thanks to the nice people at Trust Panda my latest addition to my ever growing IK family is their D300S model. The initialisation was a breeze. Quick, easy and absolutely painless. The layout of the Control Panel is simplified in comparison to earlier versions and is very user friendly containing only useful tools and information. Navigating between the outer software and the encrypted data partition is very easy. I find it particularly useful (for my purposes at least) that all data manipulations happen on the drive itself without leaving any trace of it on the host machine! While the shape and size have not changed much in 14 years these newer iterations of IK are heavier than earlier generations possibly due to the Zinc housing as opposed to Aluminium. I like that as there is something nice and reassuring about holding a chunk of hardware in your hands with some substance to it. In my view it would still qualify for EDC use. Some people complain about the detachable cap which can be misplaced or lost. I can see their point but I myself never had any issue with that. In any case it can be remedied with a relatively minor modification (see pix below) but I suppose it might void the warranty so be careful before embarking on such undertakings. Sure one could buy larger data storage for less $$$ and still in the same form factor but it is my contention that those would not be anywhere as safe and lasting as the IronKey devices. Kudos for Kingston for carrying the torch and keeping the spirit alive!
