James Watson
Popped in late one Thursday afternoon to the Sanford Road, Chelmsford branch of Universal to get a slow puncture in one tyre looked at / repaired. Had to make the drive out to Universal as a tyre fitting company right on my doorstep were not able to help due to a backlog / queue of customers ahead of me. Walked straight into a new-looking fresh and modern reception area and was seen immediately by the manager(?) who listened to my problem and having taken my keys offered me to help myself to free hot drinks whilst he took the keys and drove the car into a work bay for a mechanic to take a look. Within just 15 minutes or so, the mechanic had found a problem (a large screw embedded in the tyre) and carried out a repair. I'd also made the mistake of quoting the wrong tyre to the manager (said "offside rear" and not "nearside rear"), but was impressed that the mechanic had used his initiative and checked the other tyres rather than simply come back with a query to say that the offside rear was fine). Was expecting a large bill for a new replacement tyre, but was very pleasantly surprised to be only charged £20 for a puncture repair to the existing tyres. Also pleased and appreciated the advice that the alloy wheel for that tyre was badly corroded but as a free service the mechanic had removed the worst of the corrosion as he had the tyre off, and applied some sealant to try and slow down further corrosion... all for no charge. These days, with cars ever increasingly being designed (and built) by computers it's become harder and harder to do your own "repairs" and you must entrust any work to a garage, hoping that they will not make charges for any services or parts such as "cracked trumpet valves" you simply don't need and have never even heard of. I myself have been to places where they have insisted on fitting a new tyre, even saying other apparently good-depth within legal limit tyres on the vehicle should be replaced, and felt obliged to take their word and trust they are putting my passengers and my own safety first, rather than looking for a quick profit. The staff at Universal were friendly, amicable, outright helpful and not condescending in any way, making me feel very comfortable that my car was in good hands. Whilst waiting I watched and listened as that attitude was shown to other customers when a mechanic finished what appeared to be a "rush" job for customer, and the manager made a courtesy call to the customer straight away to advise him his car was finished and ready to collect. This is another area so many garages are lacking in; keeping the customer informed. Overall, I couldn't fault the Chelmsford branch and said so to the manager before I left. We chatted about customers and feedback and this post is upholding my promise to give some positive feedback for him and his staff. Regards
