Figuring out why 90% of the women don’t broadcast by cam may get to the heart of what’s going on here. From what I can tell from personal experience and the posts by men who’ve claimed to visit Ukraine or gotten a confession out of one of the workers, there are three reasons: one is that they were recruited by online ads for marriage agency translation work (searchable as Брачное агентство переводов работа) and so are well-paid and won’t leave Ukraine, probably date locally, and run several chats at once; don’t have the language skills to either do the translation work or match her profile’s claimed English proficiency; or posted 20-year-old or stolen photos. The variation in writing styles (blasts of flowery, idyllic emails vs. individual correspondence) may be dishonest but not an indication that prospects are hopeless, not to the extent that the lack of a cam is. I say this because they may be using scripts fed to them by the agency that recruited them to account for the language barrier. Is this trafficking? Not in the usual sense. Like much trafficking, the victim steps into it voluntarily. They are getting paid. But their overseers know how to keep them from leaving. A woman may be threatened with the loss of her job if the Big Brother mods notice her taking steps to make contact with a man. Not as brutal as what we know generally as sex trafficking, but it is quite the police state/serfdom/misogynistic world of historical Russia. This may not seem like much of a threat but it is their access to what the recruiting ads that lured them a “Western income." Is there anyone to rescue? I’d suggest only talking to women with cams, and sending them photos of what your world is like. Just as Russian pride keeps them from envying other countries, Ukrainians seem to be a little unaware at the differences with the West as well. Don’t argue the point. Just show her your world so she can figure it out for herself—like Yeltsin visiting a US grocery store or Xi visiting an American family's ranch house. Send her screenshots of your locale. Send her videos of yourself in this world to further assure her. And she’ll need assurance. Don’t think that because she doesn’t give you her contacts as soon as you ask that your prospects with her are dead. She may have a lot more than her privacy to lose by passing along any contact information. She may be risking working as a marriage agency translator ever again, work that the “marriage agencies” advertise as earning “Western salaries."
