As a Christmas cruise on the Rhine, Christmas week 2014, it was pants...high class pants, but pants just the same. This was the Christmas week, not the week before or the week after, Christmas December the 25th and to their shame, the management seemed to nearly miss this point, failing in the celebration of Christmas almost completely.
There were few decorations, 2 Christmas trees, and some tinsel greenery here and there but not much else. On the day the best offering was some singing from the crew wearing Santa hats and a visit from a Santa, being the highlights. No turkey, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, or Christmas pudding, completely subjugating the British Christmas entirely. That's not to say the food wasn't great, just not Christmas!
What a shame it could, and should have been so much better, our cruise directors finished off Christmas night with the bar being closed and a "classical Music" night, killing what little atmosphere there was stone dead! Shame on you Cruise director!
That aside, what Viking Cruises offered overall throughout the week in terms of quality was very, and we say again very good. Excellent food and wines and service second to none. We were suitably impressed, such that we have booked to do the Danube cruise 2015/16 over New Year..... hopefully the Management on the Viking Freya will consider New Year as more of an event to celebrate than Christmas was on the Viking Tor ...
