I want to start off this review by saying that I've never had any problems ordering from Sega Shop UK. Items always arrive promptly and without issue. If I do have a query, customer services reply quickly with the information I need. That side of things can't be faulted and in that respect, the shop deserves 5 stars.
However the shop itself is generally poor. Whilst it's well presented, it just doesn't feel like there's anything worth buying any more.
When the shop first began, as a passionate Sega fan for most of my life I was so excited at the possibilites this could afford. Merchandise based on my favourite company, franchises and consoles was an enticing prospect and for a while what seemed to be what was happening and I picked up some great items. I even remember a lot on social media, people from the US being jealous of what the Sega Shop had on offer and I was proud to be a UK customer.
But now? It's like a wasteland. Whoever is in charge of procurement seems to have lost any passion or interest and there's rarely anything new or exciting, besides a new Tubbz variation or something else Sonic related in a different design (don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sonic but it's all getting very samey).
The Sega Shop should be our one-stop-shop for everything Sega. Where are those Streets of Rage/Altered Beast/Super Monkey Ball action figures from the US? Why not make a deal with Data-Discs to stock the Sega-related vinyl? Communicate with Japan so get some region exclusive items in the UK? (I've just ordered the Sega Rally and Burning Rangers anniversary soundtracks from Play-Asia). Where are all the Sonic figures and merchandise that can be easily found on most other sites or official clothing items the US (again) are now enjoying?
I WANT to support the Sega Shop, as I said at the beginning, the service is impeccable and I want to buy my Sega goods from somewhere reputible but I can't. Even clicking on various themed areas of the site (like Mega Drive merch) brings me to a page of maybe two items, one being clothing where only one size is available. Its saddening and feels like the shop is on its way out.
I only visit now to pick up the coin of the month (which was a great little initiative) but never find anything new to buy with it (which I would love to do because the postage cost for a single coin almost doubles the price). Now that's over and my coin album is complete I doubt I will visit the Sega Shop again for months.
I'm sure there are business reasons why the Sega Shop is the way it is, but for it now just looks like it's treading water. Bring back the excitement from the beginning. Get new items coming in and refresh stock on old items. Sega recently announced new additions to Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio and Golden Axe. People were buzzing. Use that to get stock in for those franchises. Help me spend my money with you, because I want to.
That's all I have to say. I really hope the Sega Shop improves and regains the initial excitement. I'll be here, waiting to pick up some great Sega-related items when it does.
