This is the follow on to A Las Barricadas, and like its predecessor, it is a labour of love for the Spanish designers, as it covers the Spanish Civil War. This game is part of the War Storm Series. There is a standard set of rules which cover all of the games - learn one and it is easy to pick up the other games. The rules are also supported online with a 'living set of rules'. I would advise that you take a look at the game on Boardgamegeek and take a look at the rules before buying. The game components are clear and colourful. The maps are attractive with clearly defined contours, They are mounted on medium weight card and join on edges to configure the various areas for the scenarios. There are also overlays to expand the terrain types even further - Eg as well as some additional built-up areas there is a full wide river as an overlay. Counters contain a good deal of information but are crisply printed and legible. The counters are a little on the thin side - gaming tweezers are essential or stacks become fiddly. Counters represent individual leaders,platoon-sized units, or support weapons with crews. The rules are quite clear and generally easy to follow with good examples of play. After checking for initiative, and units in/out of command, players alternately activate a leader and the units they command. Counters generally move or fire and the rules include reaction fire and assault. Morale and performance are heavily influenced by the quality of leaders. The counter mix and scenarios cover the complexities of the war with the numerous factions on the Nationalist and Republican sides. The relationships between factions influence their ability to support each other in combat. What makes this period interesting? There are not many games covering this conflict. It became the crucible of modern warfare and the Russians, Italians French and Germans all supplied equipment and/ or advisors and troops, particularly allowing the Germans to hone their tank development and tactics. As well as early conventional weapons there were many improvised lorries and armoured cars and many have their counters in the game. There are 17 scenarios and the game is backwards compatible with A Las Barricada s. In addition, there is a point value system to allow you to form your own scenarios. If you like company / Battalion scaled games and fancy a 'different' period with a very broad range of troop qualities (from the Professional hardened North African Nationalist Veterans to the International Volunteers on the Republican side), mixed with improvised and pre-second world-war military vehicles, then I can recommend this game. I don't think that any other game at this scale captures these features as well. I was looking forward to this game and I have not been disappointed. You can buy this game for a very broad range of prices. Zatu is my company of choice because of their service quality. In this case, their price was also very competitive.
