I recently spoke with a Gentleman about a 1990 Centurion C-350 4x4. I spoke with him back and forth, a few different times. Each conversation fairly lengthy, & in great detail about this particular truck. It was completely “too good to be true”. These trucks are few, and far between. They’re rare, to say the least. I found one via Craigslist. One that wasn’t completely trashed. Low mileage, & all original. Using CARFAX in the past, on every vehicle I purchase(or thought to purchase)since 2005. “Old Hat” for me, I began my research via the CARFAX online. I searched the VIN, &...du-du-duuuuu! She’s been in a collision, she’s had several repairs since the assembly line. She’s something resembling a “Lemon”. She’s been repainted. She’s also showing over 300,000 miles, with multiple discrepancies. She’s not what the Gentleman describes at all. Thinking perhaps CARFAX got it wrong. I found myself giving the Gentleman the benefit of doubt. I personally inspected this truck, & Bingo! CARFAX was spot on, this truck was definitely a hard pass. Silver lining, a few weeks later I found another, confirmed the validity via CARFAX. Everything checked out, she also passed my personal inspection perfectly. These experiences have solidified my trust in CARFAX 100%. A BIG THANK YOU to all of the people who make CARFAX what it is.

I was searching for a very specific model of an older diesel pickup. I found one with exceptionally low miles, and an exceptionally high price to go with it. I felt the miles justified the price, and I was going to go look at it. I asked the seller for the VIN to run CARFAX. He sent it to me, but in the same message he said that he had "just found out that the odometer must have been changed" and the truck actually had about triple the advertised miles. I scratched that one off my list, and found another. The CARFAX on that one confirmed everything the seller told me, and I bought it. I'm very pleased with it, so THANK YOU CARFAX for your very reputation saving me from an expensive mistake! John Byers Spring Run, PA

I still having a hard time getting Audi A6 model. I was trying to get the price within my price that I can afford it. Other days I went to a local mid-size independent dealership and trying to bring down the amount where I want it as $10,000 flat and out the door price. That what I want. They are keeping add-on and make excuses. I decided to call off the deal it not work out on my side. So I walk away empty Audi A6. I have currently 2004 Audi A4. I am still keeping it. I just want at least 2010 and newer. I wish to see free carfax of they list of a vehicle. I instead have light color inside and outside on car. Moreover, power seats, leather seats as well.

Carfax report on my own car was riddled with errors - 8 in total - including things that simple data controls would flag up like a report of the car being service before it was made. This reduced the trade-in value from $34,000 to nothing, and I missed the deal I was shopping for. It took me hours and hours to collect all the documentation that was supposed to be in the carfax. Please quote: I have no faith in the CarFax system

I bought a car with a "clean Carfax" report that the dealer was very happy to push on me. "no damage reported to Carfax" but every one of the body panels had been painted, at different times and the drivers airbag had been deployed. I went to the shop that painted it (called around to find out) and they told me they regularly rebuild cars that have been totaled and looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if the reported the damage. "Why would we" he said. A car can be totaled, airbags deployed and rebuilt by a guy in his garage and never show up on a carfax report. Why would anyone report doing work to car, especially if they knew that doing so would harm their customer, making it more difficult to sell? Carfax is just barely above a scam in my opinion. Would a criminal be any less of a criminal if they told you "nobody has reported any crimes I may have committed. The whole concept is silly. I also found numerous examples of "One Owner" cars that had 2 or 3, even 4 owners, right there in the report. A rep from Carfax told me they "just use DMV records" but all I had to was count the number of times a car was sold and new owner reported to count 4 owners on a report with the big "ONE OWNER" banner on it. Carfax should state on every report: nobody is required to report even catastrophic damage to a vehicle and very few shops do so, the information in this report is extremely limited.

Having the Carfax info helped reassure my buyer that the vehicle was worth the price I was asking. It made it easier to sell my vehicle to the first person that wanted a look at it.

The near newness of Silver Creek Classics 1996 Ford F150 belied it's 77,000 mile odometer reading. Sure enough, CARFAX revealed documented mileage to be at least 155,000. The dealer admitted the 'error' and sent a refund check, to my relief. Many thanks to the good folks at CARFAX and the invaluable service they provide to the automotive world!

CARFAX is a great service but I can't say they made me happy. Quite the contrary. The fact that the report on the 2013 Prius Persona that I was trying to sell showed prior body damage caused me to lose $5,000. Actually, it was just work that I had done to correct minor nicks and scratches.

Vehicle: 2013 Porsche Panamera Background: "Lost" in transition from LA, CA to Tucson, AZ Overview: Quick to sell Concerns: CarMax inspection failed to ID cracked windshield, proper oil level, memory settings failed, 5yr / 30k mileage required added $750 filters. Buyer to split $420 repaint rear panel given several scratches CarMax covered over. Summation: CarMax does not deal in high-end vehicles to the degree required to assure the buyer confidence said vehicle is free of "concerns." CarMax's specifications are stated in this case clearly do not equate to high-end maintenance (in part due to certification of mechanics and lack of specific tools). Rushed experience! Good news / bad news. Recommendation: Do not purchase vehicle that was "lost" in transit without a through understanding in writing, and do not take possession after dark!! Takeaway: Sales does not deal with purchaser after sale. Service is suspect as to follow-up. Had to make appointment with Porsche dealership as the CarMax service person left a message as opposed to calling AGAIN to support the NEW CUSTOMER. Said service agent's responses were not credible. General Manager responded to "returning said vehicle." Upon meeting NEW CUSTOMER stated "What is going on?" Really -- that is it! After numerous calls and two appointments with Service!
