“Lousy directions. I tried to start a game. I looked at the startup file I was directed to. I couldn't figure it out. Why couldn't there have been a simple one-page sheet showing how to start a game against the board. I am sure once I figure it out, it will be simple, but I'm busy, and I don't really have the time to go looking all over the Internet for something that should have been included in the box, or at least a proper link to how to get this thing to work.”

Touchsense technology requires some set up to work properly - it is just the nature of the beast. However setup takes just a minute, or a few seconds once you are familiar with the board.

“The board and the pieces work amazingly. You barely touch a piece and the board will light up. The pieces are made with high quality. You can play without an app but if you want to take advantage of the full ai and assistance you'll need the app. The app is the only downfall of everything. Still needs a lot of work and chess.com integration, which they are working on. With more people buying the board, I have no doubt that they will fix the app and make it more user friendly.”
“I brought this at the company party and it was a blast! We tried all kinds of wacky combinations of AI and human levels. At some point, both sides were just executing moves for the AI level 1 and having fun at its blunders. On the technical side, a couple of times the board got in a strange state with several purple squares (it might have been our fault). It went away when we reset the pieces to the starting position.”

These are some things I would like to utilize:
1: An option to not use lights while i'm playing (against another person on OTB, so its still recording my game to analyse afterwards but not have the board light up as it can accidentally give away a plan for a fork or skewer against my opponent.
2: A way to save the game so that we can come back to the game later to complete.
3: Add mutilple profiles so that I could add my son and other mates as a profile for OTB games.
4: I havent been successful at playing any other Chess up opponents online yet, have only been able to play other lichess players.
5: the board doesn't recognise my win after other lichess players bail on a game.
6: Hint limit isn't an option for OTB opponent.
7: an option to play back from a blunder but continue to record the next version of game.

“The materials were decent but the operation was poor. Approx 1 in 5 games ended in board errors where a random light or lights would come on & not go off; game would freeze under these circumstances. Saving games is iffy, worked less than half the time; saving should be auto (my opinion) or indicator light should be unique to square, maybe red since that would not be used for normal play so user is sure game saved. Board should be capable of better play without app; good avg. club player would run around 1500, board level seems about 1200 max. Using app was very buggy (other reason wished lone board was better), quit shortly after receiving. Since my issues are firmware/software based it is my hope that the issues I encountered get repaired and the board will perform as stated.”

“Overall, ChessUp is great to have in my hands after so long. The board is well-made and the concept of touch-sensitive pieces interacting with a light-enabled board is genius. There is a lot of potential still untapped - and that is why I deducted one star. It's nice the hardware is delivered, but so much of the opportunity lies in the software. Integration with online chess platforms, much more lessons and educational resources that leverage the unique board functionality, etc. Hoping to see that sooner rather than later. Also shipping was a bit of a challenge since I was told the board had shipped and kept asking why UPS showed no progress, only to be told that it takes time for UPS to update. In the end, it turned out my board was not shipped at all - this would've been resolved faster if the company had listened to me more seriously at the start.”
