“Fatllama is an excellent site. As a new user, I found it very clearly laid out and easy to use. Signing up was quick and straightforward even with the elaborate but reassuring security measures. I found the equipment I was looking for at a suitable location, put in a request for the date I wanted and, as promised, the hirer replied swiftly through the in-site messenger, which works very well. Arrangements were made and modified with ease directly with the hirer through the site. Payment quick and safe with PayPal and I hired the speakers at a far cheaper price than I would have got from a shop, along with friendly professional service all-round. Great concept guys, and well realised. Rock on Fatllama!!”
“As a working photographer I find Fatlama to be invaluable and a godsend. The staff are helpful and patient and the lender who I use is super reliable and friendly. My experience has been a great one and I thank you for setting up a brilliant lending platform for people like me.

“Great company and great people! Super helpful stuff, got me the scooter I needed immediately even though some lender were not available. Hundred percent recommended”
“I came across Fat Llama because a friend of mine recommended it after buying an electric scooter. Great prices and really awesome service. I bought a brand new Canon 4000d for a really decent price and have also decided to list it for rent. Win Win.”
“The platform is solid and the customer is generally good. The fees they charge (on both sides of the transaction) are rather high however. The insurance is an excellent and necessary provision, but looking at the details it’s limited - it doesn’t cover cosmetic damage (which may be important to resale value of an item) and appears to be limited to the price you paid for an item rather than the value of the item itself. That could cause issues of you bought an item at a discount, or a similar type of situation.”
“excellent services when your only other option is expensive equipment hire from companies. couldn't believe what companies were charging for screen and projector. pick up, person and equipment were all excellent. will use again.”
“I have used Fat Llama for many years as a renter and lender. My experience overall has been top notch. What I really appreciate is that Fat Llama has safeguards in place to protect you when things go wrong.”
“Been an avid user of FatLlana, customer support team is always super helpful with my queries. Zero effort when it comes to fixing the broken items. Coolest idea ever!”
“Fat Llama was a complete life saver for me. I stupidly completely forgot that it was my sons birthday. Luckily I found a seller that I could come collect off nearby. Will definitely be using again!!!”
“The idea is amazing and the world needs it - and it's great to see someone actually trying to do this! Currently using Fat Llama is a pretty slow and cumbersome experience though.
Firstly, it's totally manual: there are no tools to make the renting process seamless. For example, even though Doodle has existed for 10 years, there are no built-in tools to make it easier to find a mutual pickup time and location, and instead you have to use slow back and forth exchange of text messages. That alone makes it completely impractical to use FatLlama to lend items where the rental value is under £5.
Second, the product itself still feels like a first version. This is probably growing pains, but nevertheless. By default they email, push notify, *and* text message you every time there is a reply to a message, and send follow-ups if you don't reply straight away. This means that if one person sends one message to you, you can end up getting 4-6 notifications. You have to email support to get the email notifications turned off (there's no setting in your profile to control that). On an iPhone SE, many of the critical buttons don't even appear on the screen because they are covered by a banner - it's been assumed that everyone is using a bigger screen.
Maybe most importantly, there's really not that much on FatLlama. They've gone for a "rent anything from anyone anywhere in the world" approach, which seems to have led to there being a few listings spread very sparsely around big cities, rather than a concentrated and varied group of listings in any single area. That means you will have to travel a long way to pick something up.
Ultimately all these things mean FatLlama is only really for renting very high value items right now. If they billed themselves as specifically for high end audiovisual equipment this would be totally fair enough, but instead they bill themselves as "rent anything from anyone". That's just not accurate.
I really hope they succeed though! The world definitely needs fewer copies of the same items when so much of the time they sit around redundant most of the time.”
