“This is a poor site they keep removing perfectly genuine ads because of gumtree selling rules but then allow hundreds of dodgy scammers to sell there illegal items the system is absolute rubbish there are way better sites out there to buy and sell”

“I found an ad with my info on it, I reported it to Gumtree for 3 days in a row, but no action has been taken. This ad is for sure a scam and its easy to identify it but they have not done anything to prevent people of being a victim to crime. I hope the action-fraud company will shut down their website immediately.”

“Advertising Tutoring on Gumtree web site Summary 1. Gumtree allowing advertising of essay mills(writing for students) on Tuition sub section 2. Giving priority to essay mills above genuine tutors 3. Writing for students is totally against all university rules and regulations 4. Gumtree rules do not allow writing for students adverts yet allow thousands of such adverts. 5. Useless advertising medium for individual advertisers as business paid advertisers dominate the sector with thousands of adverts every hour. These comments refer specifically to the Service sector business section sub category Tuition but may be applying to other sectors of the Gumtree advertising web site also. I am a university level private tutor. The free advertising option no longer applies to advertising as a tutor in the sub category tuition section therefore all adverts are paid for. However, there is priority given to business account advertisers on Gumtree. These are people who are paying monthly for multiple adverts. These multiple adverts take priority over all other advertisers and are hourly flooding the tuition section of the web site. The business account multiple adverts I am referring to here are being placed on Gumtree tuition section and are specifically advertising writing dissertations, theses, assignments, reports, coursework to enable students to cheat. These companies are commonly known as essay mills. These adverts have nothing to do with the key search terms tutoring, tuition, tutor which the section is supposed to be for. The writing dissertations, theses, assignments, reports, coursework for students is totally against all university policy. There is currently a government petition available to sign called Ban the provision and advertising of 'essay mill' cheating services. Quote-“'Essay mills' provide custom written essays for students to cheat with. Prices range from a couple of hundred pounds for a single essay to over £6,750 for a PhD dissertation. This undermines the high standards of universities and is unfair to honest students - but is currently legal. The Irish government has announced a new law that would make it illegal to provide or advertise contract cheating services. New Zealand and 17 US states already have such laws. We call for the UK Government to pass a similar law to stamp out this unacceptable practice.” Any tutor placing a single advert for genuine for tuition services at prices £5.99 to £10.99 are immediately followed by a minimum of 5 and possible 20 adverts from one dissertation writing business dominating this tuition sub section and the individual advertisers single paid for advert is down the page or off the front page immediately or within 20-30 minutes. The sub section specifically designated to attract tutors advertising has been taken over by one company advertising multiple adverts for writing dissertations, theses, assignments, reports, coursework to enable students to cheat. They have hijacked the word “tutor”. They do not provide a tuition service. There is an opportunity to pay more to Gumtree to have the individual advert at the top of this tuition sub section and kept there for a minimum of 3 days at for example £59 for London area. From my own experience this also is a total waste of time and money for the individual advertiser. On counting the number of so called top adverts in this tuition sub section for dissertation, essay, and coursework writing for students today there were at least 30 in the top advert placing. Therefore the logistics of this are- searching on a mobile phone results show just 2 adverts on the top placing therefore the individual advertisers advert would show on a rotating basis 1 out of 15 time search if lucky. Gumtree rules on their web site as of 25 January 2019 “Services not allowed on our site. This applies to paid for and free services - essay and dissertation services” Yet as of January 25th 2019 there are 5,350 ads for dissertation writing in Academic Tuition & Classes The word tutor has been hijacked by the dissertation writing businesses (essay mills) who are using the Gumtree website tuition section for their own private advertising web site. There is no space for genuine tutors now on Gumtree and any private tutor should not be paying money to be given, not only, low priority but absolutely no priority or in fact no chance of a fair presence to advertise a genuine service which they are prepared to pay for. There is never a refund I have found. In fact when I have complained to Gumtree in the past then it is my email address which is banned.”

“I paid £99 for a premium advert for 14 days.....£99!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bad enough you would think. Well they had anyvan sponsored adverts on my paid for premium advert. Come on Gumtree explain..... I bet you do not!!! AVOID THIS RIP OFF”

“GOT business package to put my advert every day . but getting nothing and paying around 700£ direct debit and year of contract. with no cancellation option, spoke to them alot of time that how can i pay you when i am not getting any business from gumtree. but no positive reply on top now start saying i must pay as i done one year contract and if i stop direct debit then they send my details to debits recovery company which may take my belonging or currupt my credit history..... please avoid ..... no any business coming from them.”

“I paid to have my Ad bumped up but not only did it not get bumped up but DISAPPEARED all together. I eventually got on to a Gumtree agent on "live chat" who at first denied there was a problem and then confirmed there was one. He could not rectify the problem so he forwarded the complaint to the "tech department". 48 hours and lots of emails later I got an email from some simpleton who said there was no problem and that there never was one. I tried to email back but their was NO response. MY emails to gumtree are ignored and the live chat agents disconnect as soon as they read the complaint. It must be too hard for the simpletons to rectify. To this day the ad does not come up when searching for the vehicle. Gumtree has left a foul taste in my mouth and I will now be canning them every chance I get to everyone who will listen! I would give a negative star rating if I could. This review is the start!!”

“Absolute shambolic customer service. How is the company operating. Everytime I put on an add it removes. I contact gumtree who say someone is hacking my account etc etc.. change password and go again.. this has gone on at least 8 times!! so frustrating. Freeads is so much easier and better. Please gumtree if you are reading this sort your customer service out!”

“gumtree used to be a great site, could find what you wanted easily, then some young tech savy decided to make it better and now it sucks, can't get what you want to find, have to be so specific....well i want to browse all adverts don't want to be directed by you thanks ...i used to use it a lot but can't even search on it now such a shame”

“If you still have a gumtree account, deactivate it now! It's not worth the husstle, trust me. My account has been hacked and my name and password changed to 'Laura'. Whilst dealing with this I realised that a top of the range Land Rover is being sold from my account for a ridiculously low price. Immediately I panicked, I was convinced that the car is stolen and gumtree is facilitating the sale out of my account. I immediately contacted gumtree on every single possible number and email address i found, tried to deactivate my account to which I didn't have login details for without success and after half an hour decided to contact the police. The last thing I want is to be arrested for handling stolen goods! The police were buffled but very helpful. I had a peace of mind that I reported it and that I am no longer associated with a stolen car. Police have rang several times, turns out that the car is not stolen (yet) and is being sold by the legal owner on another site. Certainly not on gumtree and certainly not for that price! Police were able to alert the owner that there's a possibility that someone will try and steal the car and gave them all support they needed. I was signposted to cyber crime unit where I've made my statement and the matter is being investigated. Response from gumtree? Nil. It's been a month now and I had absolutely no response whatsoever. The advert, despite me asking them to remove it from my hacked account stayed on, until the police advised me to take it down. I've also noticed and reported that the same advert appears out of several other accounts, probably hacked too. This is illegal activity taking place righ in front of gumtree and they just don't care. Imagine if the car was stolen and the police came knocking on my door. I would have a lot of explaining to do. And whilst gumtree ha e no power over hackers, I understand, they failed to act, failed to remove that advert from my account, failed to secure it failedto investigate the issue and as such, criminals are free to roam on gumtree and I am out. Never again.”

“Paid over £100 to place ad that was deleted after 2 days, no explanation. Have sent several emails and have been given a couple of 'case numbers', but there is no comeback and no other means of contact. The whole site seems a badly managed shambles, with ads like mine seeming to disappear without trace. I feel the operation should be referred to an Ombudsman and I will try that”
