I had to appeal an MOT with DVSA! Halfords Autocentre York Rd failed the car with major defects on the suspension, requiring immediate repairs quoted at £360. The car had 18,026 miles on the clock and had recently been serviced with a clean bill of health. I therefore appealed to the DVSA who subsequently passed the MOT with not even advisory points.

Booked car for AC diagnosis for 11-30 however when arrived was informed that it would be late afternoon before it was ready why do you give a time when it could be 4 - 5 hours before it's ready total waste of time

Halfords have refused to post my review on their site so I'm putting it here. I booked online for my car's annual service & MOT at the Southend on Sea centre. I've used them for a couple of years & been both amused & annoyed by the attempts to sell extras & the lengthy 'advisory' list of work they claim needs doing that is invariably given. This year was different. Maybe they use profiling & had identified me as an ageing bloke who would accept whatever they said! The handover of the car was easy, the sales pitch for extra items avoided & I waited for the call that it was completed. I got the call – it had failed on the rear brakes with 'Brake discs significantly & obviously worn / corroded'. Interesting – there had been a verbal advisory that the discs were worn but within the limits the previous year (with a jaw dropping price quote for replacement) and I had the discs & pads replaced 7 or 8 months ago at another garage for about half Halford's quote. Halfords seemed quite surprised that I didn't agree to the work and I took the car back to the other garage. They checked the discs, nothing wrong, little wear, no corrosion & only 3 – 4000 miles done since fitting. So I put it in for an MOT at the centre they use – the brakes were fine but Halfords had missed a potentially dangerous fault in the steering (but fairly cheap to repair) that needed fixing before it passed its MOT. I contacted the DVSA who re-mot'd my car - nothing wrong with the brakes. They are visiting Halfords to investigate the unjustified failure. I will never use Halfords again. In common with the other national chains they are far more interested in meeting sales targets, pushing unnecessary and expensive repairs & selling extras rather than identifying actual faults. I'm certain they try it on with many customers who they think will accept whatever they say & pay their inflated prices. They're a bunch of cowboys - Avoid!

Took my Alfa Romeo for their free air-con diagnostics. Staff were friendly and told me it would be about an hour and a half. Went back then and it was ready. They had checked the system for leaks and all good but it was very low so they had topped it up but done so without calling me for consent. It was £50 and I wanted it done anyway so I didn't say anything but bad to do work without approval. Car was nice and cold on the 20 minute drive home but next morning no cold air. Called them and they said there is obviously a leak (well yes I guessed that!) but they could not explain how their system did not detect one the previous day when they tested it. Took a lot of arguing but they agreed to refund the £50 then told me I should get the car to a specialist for an aircon diagnostic!!! Useless.

Took my car in today for a free break check, after an hours wait for an estimated 30 mins wait I finally got my car back, only to be told all the break pipes were corroded, i thought ok i'll get those replaced then, they quoted me £900! to get them replaced, only to find out they charge £89 per hour for labour which is where over half the cost would have occured! Not impressed with your outlandish costs considering most over garages charge a whole lot less and and could do the same job for a lot lot less. never going back again!

took my car for aircon diagnostics and regas to Halfords Slough Farnham Rd, after booking the slot online . after 4 hrs went their to check and a mechanic was sitting on reception and said it would be done shortly because they are busy. I said I will grab the chair and wait , the gent harshly said no wait and fix service today. So stood outside in scorching sun to see if they will start work on my car.I can see my car parked .finally I decided to get my car keys.the Gent on reception brought my key and I told him you guys wasted my 4 hrs after I booked the slot.He told me I booked online and it's not their responsibility. absolutely ridiculous service, that their staff cant even tell a lie properly.Just messing around with people's time without even an apology. after half an hour I got email saying my booking has been cancelled.

Can't go lower than 1 star?? Well i took my car for a free air con diagnostics and check where they are supposed to check for leaks etc. Well they couldn't find any leak or anything wrong and said it just needed regassing. Apparently they did the whole gass with coloured dye to check for leaks but nothing was found. So i pay the £50 for them to regass only to use it for around 20 minutes. And next time i fire it up it doesn't work!! I take it back to them and they do ANOTHER check and find the leak that they missed the first time around! And then they quote me £358 just for the pipe, and that total doesn't include VAT and labour! And no acknowledgement from them regarding how they missed it before charging me £50 to regass saying there is no leak the first time around. An intentional way of just getting as much money out of me as possible? Either way no acknowledgement and no word passed the price, without VAT and labour, just for the pipe. I don't trust Halfords at all now!

Took my car to have the front bulbs replaced a month ago. I believed in all good faith they had been done. Had my MOT done over the weekend and the bulbs are in really poor condition. Definitely have not been replaced. Incredibly angry that I have been charged for something that hasn't been done.

I had a slit at 11:30 for a free Air conditioning check. They took the car inside the working place at 13:15. Kept it for 45 minutes without working at all. Just had the bonnet open. But I could see everything. Finally someone drove the car out. He handled the keys and told me that there was electrical fault on it. In other words the mechanic never vacuumed the air cond system to see if it sustains vacuum or not. Neither tried to run nitrogen to see if there was any leak. Bottom line, they just got me back because I left them a bad review a few weeks ago on MOT of the same vehicle, and it showed on their records about the previous experience with the car serviced by them. By the way. In their system it shows that the todays work never took placed as it was cancelled by me. So now you know all about their ethics too.

NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER! On 26th June 2021, I took my 2018 Vauxhall Corsa into Halfords Autocentre in Aylesbury for an air-con diagnostic check, as it was blowing out warm air. After a couple of hours they rang me to collect the car, but said they had found a problem. Apparently, there was a hole in the main pipe, which they quoted £475 to have repaired (including gas @ £110). I decided to get a second opinion, so I took the car to a local independent garage, who ran all the relevant tests on their diagnostic equipment and the system passed OK, with no holes or leaks identified. After careful examination, they could find no relevant marks made by Halfords Auto-centre as to the location of the supposed hole, so the garage injected a coloured dye, which would identify any leaks, and then re-gassed the system. Since then, the dye has not appeared, therefore NO LEAKS and my air-con system is still blowing out ice-cold air. I’m absolutely disgusted and so angry, as it appears Halfords Autocentre Aylesbury tried to rip me off! I will never be returning to Halfords Auto-centre in future and will stick with honest, reliable family-run businesses who in this instance, went out of their way to identify the "apparent" fault.

I cannot express enough how disgusted I am with the experience I had with Halfords McConechys Autocentre in Lockerbie. I took my car in to fix a flat tyre. The guy told me that he couldn't find a puncture and would need a new tyre. I was too naive to question this and had my autistic son in the car but have since read this is a common scam. Charged me over £70 for this new tyre and stated "your car is falling apart". He proceeded to offer to look over the car and give me a price for everything that needed fixed, as they offer a pay-it-up service. He came back with an almost £900 set of repairs and a full service. I want to point out that the guy said absolutely nothing about any issues with the cooling system. I accepted this, scared that if I took the car elsewhere, it would still need £900 worth of repairs but other small garages would not have a pay-it-up option. I have since read that this has happened to other people who then took their cars to other garages who fixed all repairs for significantly less. I booked my car in for these repairs, they carried them out and handed me a break-down of the work in an invoice. I drove my car from the Halfords in Lockerbie to the Tesco, 0.3 miles away. I went food shopping, which took about 1.5 hours. When I returned to the car, there was a substantial puddle underneath. I drove it the 0.3 miles back to Halfords and pointed this out. They confirmed that I had a leak in my cooling system and he would take a look at it. About 2 hours later I got a phone call stating that my cooling system was "cracked" and that I would need a replacement costing almost £300. Oh but don't worry, they would just add this on top of the other almost £900 bill in the payment plan that I already had set up. They said that they highly advise against driving as it was dangerous and I had my children with me, so my only option was to have them fix this issue and foot the extra almost £300 bill. Not only was this coolant system never an issue with my car, but he also charged me almost £200 for a "complete service" which showed absolutely nothing wrong with the cooling system, or surely he would have flagged this up sooner. Now, within this "complete service" - according to Halford's OWN WEBSITE - they check the cooling system. HOWEVER when I exclaimed that I should not have to pay for damage that was CLEARLY done within the garage, the assistant manager then said they were "nowhere near the cooling system". So not only are they suggesting that this damage was done within a 0.3 mile drive to Tesco, by their own admission, this would then mean that the "full service" they charged me for was not actually carried out correctly. On top of all of this dodgy experience, I was due to go on holiday with my kids the next day so I asked for a time to collect the car and was told 11am. I was due to leave at 9am, so had no choice but to push my leaving time by 2 hours. I expressed this to the mechanic/liar and he then confirmed that yes, the car would be ready for 11am. I phoned at 10.30am the next day as I had not heard from the garage. An uninterested response was "aw aye the parts have JUST ARRIVED". I again expressed that I had places to be and he gave no sh*ts, just said he would phone when it was ready. I had 2 very excited little kids waiting, so I went into Lockerbie to wait. I sat in the Tesco car park as I was legitimately wracked with anxiety due to the whole ordeal. I phoned again to be told that the part was in, but not only do they "huv tae bleed it" but they didn't even have the coolant needed to fill it. Interesting, seeing as they knew the day before that they needed this coolant. I admittedly lost it at this point, stating that not only were they incompetently handling this, but also having the cheek to charge me for it as clearly they had damaged it in the first place. He was offended, because OBVIOUSLY the very very common stereotype of a dodgy, scamming, lying mechanic is just fabricated from nowhere, right? He got the regional manager to phone me. She was polite, but was clearly angry that I had the gall to question the integrity of her staff and in turn was questioning my own integrity. I kept pointing out that this car went into the garage with no cooling system damage and left the garage with cooling system damage - doesn't take a genius. Her staff were saying they were nowhere near the coolant system yet had charged nearly £300 for a full service in which they are SUPPOSED TO CHECK THE COOLANT SYSTEM. She agreed to take the expense off my file but made sure to say that she thinks that it could have been damaged in the 2 mins it takes to drive 0.3 miles on a completely undamaged, straight road. I then had to go home, as we had no car to take to the holiday. They even had the cheek to phone at 2.30pm and say it was ready, knowing full well it was 3.5 hours late. Arrogant, scamming, lying, incompetent clowns. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Went for my precooked air conditioning check at Halfords Unit 1, Trunk Road Retail Parl, Middlesbrough, to be told that it wouldn’t be done today. ‘I’ve only got one man’. No apology. Customer service? Don’t make me laugh! Halfords? Never again.
