The analysis of my hearing performance by John Rowlands was very satisfactory. The resulting hearing aids have certainly improved my hearing and at the follow-up appointment an adjustment to the reception of higher frequencies has eliminated annoying background rustling sounds. I am very impressed by the personal aspect of my appointments and the assurance that contact on any future problems can be made as well as there being further checking appointments..

While I was very satisfied with what the hearing care professional who attended me did, the lead up to the appointment was very confused. I received 3 appointment cards, 2 for the same professional but for different days and times, and 1 for another professional on the same day and at the same time as a previous appointment, but different professional. Then once I had clarified with the local office what was the correct appointment, when the day arrived, due to an unfortunate circumstance, another different professional turned up.

David arrived promptly, well dressed and tidy. Listened to everything I told him and he showed empathy. The test began with a thorough medical history, he wrote notes as he went along but looked at me when he was speaking so I could lip read. The actual test was thorough. He took a long time, it wasn’t rushed at all. There were extra tests, relevant to my case, not performed in a hospital hearing test. The one where you had to repeat what a woman was saying when there was considerable background chatter, as if you were in a cafe/restaurant. I found this quite distressing as I couldn’t hear her at all. David was sympathetic. The results of the test- David told me my results. I knew the best of it already. I would have liked to have seen them in the graph format rather than just be told. Hearing aids - David demonstrated a pair which are an improved and smarter model than the NHS ones. They felt good etc, but I was expecting a pair that didn’t have a piece behind the ear. However I discovered that the ones with the behind the ear piece were the most expensive. I wasn’t shown any other, however David is returning at a later date to discuss hearing aids and prices.

Very, very impressed by the quality of sound of the new digital aids, the nice man who came to my house, checked my hearing and explained how and why they work so well. The difference between them and my free NHS aids is quite remarkable although the NHS aids opened my ears to hearing again.

First attended HH in December, 2018, the week before Xmas, in the hope of getting a hearing aid that would help me enjoy the festive activities. Sadly, it was not to be due to the level of my deafness. An MRI scan at the hospital had not discovered anything sinister, so it was left to HH to find an aid suitable to regain some hearing to help me back to socialising etc. It took until early March, and two further, "advanced" type of hearing aids to reach a point where I could hold a reasonable conversation with friends, with the help of using a dongle. I can only persevere now until my brain gets used to the latest hearing aids, and trust it will improve my ability to finally listen to the radio, hearing speech and music clearly, and watch TV without the use of sub-titles. The staff at HH have been very helpful in trying to advance any improvement in my hearing, and have pledged to continue until, hopefully, one day it will return to something acceptable enough to even return to going to the cinema, theatre, special events and holidays. We are now in Mid May (16th) and unfortunately, my hearing has made no improvement, despite the fact I am on the third set of HH hearing aids, which are supposed to be the "best". The dongle I had with the second pair of hearing aid, which worked reasonably well in quiet surroundings, was swopped for a more-modern dongle which hasn't proved to be as efficient. The previous dongle cannot be programmed with the new hearing aids. It seems the "30 day trial period", before you can decide if you want a refund, is obviously not long enough for some people's brain to get used to "new" sounds through new hearing aids. The HH brochures make all sorts of claims, like "you can hear a whisper", "you can listen to the radio & television clearly again", "take part in general group conversations" etc., which may well work for some people with minor hearing losses, but the brochures fail to say that those with a severe hearing loss could take longer, maybe years. These reasons are why I can only rate HH a "poor" rating as I look forward to a holiday in June 2019, which will be frustrating in more ways than normal.
