“The International TEFL Academy offers accredited courses, and I chose the 11-week online course - it's an ideal option for those that are in employment and need to manage their time carefully. The 120-hour course exceeds the minimum standard for accreditation and is Internationally recognized by employers. I found the course to be interactive, engaging, and very well structured; throughout the course, there was clear guidance provided by the instructor, as well as regular, constructive feedback. The assignments, coursework, tests, and peer interaction provided plenty of opportunities to practice new skills acquired during the course. The wealth of information available on the International TEFL Academy website is extremely valuable, and lifetime job search assistance is offered on completion of a course.”

“If you're a native speaker of English and can prove it with a passport, you don't need to get a TEFL certification. Yes, it is useful to get the idea of how to teach your own language, as being a native speaker doesn't mean you know it or know how to explain it, but that can be achieved by individual research and self study, without the need to pay loads of money for a certificate that no one will ever ask you for anyway. Depending on what country you're from and which one you want to live in, your American/British passport is enough to find you a job (at least in most European countries). My experience was mostly in living and teaching in Spain, and if that's the country you're interested in , then the best option would be going through the program called Auxiliares de Conversación. It's a far better option than TEFl, as you're guaranteed work placement, you will be working less hours than TEFL teachers, and won't have to prepare any lessons (which can take hours a week). International TEFL Academy stresses that you don't have to be a native speaker to get their certification as long as your level of English is sufficient. As much as that is true, they fail to mention that you will face huge descrimination as a non-native, with most companies not wanting to even speak to you or conduct an interview. That doesn't mean it's impossible to secure a teaching job as a non-native, but it's much more difficult and can take months of struggle. Even then, you might be forced to lie to your students about your background. That's exactly what happened to me, as, even though English is my main language, I studied it extensively at university for years and have a degree to prove it, passed my TEFL certification with better result than any of the natives I know (receiving 99% on final exam), I still faced descrimination for months on the grounds that I wasn't born in an English speaking country and don't have a British/American passport. The International TEFL Academy does provide solid grounds of the language and teaches you various techniques, however it is still hugely overpriced for what it is. For me, the best part of it was that I got to meet many people on my course and made friends for years, but I didn't get much out of it professionally.”

Hi! We're disappointed that you've had a less than stellar experience dealing with the difficulties of discrimination as a non-native English speaker. It's unfortunate that some employers in particular countries focus more on your passport or your first language rather than your skills and qualifications as an English teacher. We do try as much as possible to be realistic in our information and it's a delicate balancing act. We do stress that "native" speakers are typically preferred in many countries worldwide. At the same time, we've had many non-native students who are fluent English speakers who have had great experiences teaching English abroad. Again, we're sorry this was not the case for you. “ITFA is a solid and reputable company that provides you with the tools you need to teach ESL. I did my TEFL in 2015 and I can say I was pretty satisfied with the way the course was structured and delivered. I had already started teaching way back in 2000, but I needed to validate my teaching experience with certification. It brings theory and hands-on practice during the training. For this. I highly recommend ITFA for anyone who wants to pursue a teaching career in ESL as a profession.”

“During my course at ITA, I learned how to manage classrooms. Whether it is online or in-person, after 6 years of finishing my TEFL course I am still connected with ITA and they give me job guidance. Thanks to the certificate and ITA staff help, I wouldn't be where I am today. My current job is English coordinator at CESA Business School.”

“I am a full-time writer/editor, and I thought that a TEFL certification combined with my background and earlier volunteer experience as an English tutor would form a good foundation for a retirement plan in a couple of years. I completed the online TEFL program in 2020 and volunteered virtually for 8 months for a grassroots organization. I then added two ITA specialty courses to my tutoring toolbox, Teaching Business English and Teaching English Online, and recently signed up for the new ITA Tutoring English course. I'm now one step closer to retirement and am looking forward to starting an online tutoring business, thanks to the great education and resources I continue to obtain through the International TEFL Academy!”

“I completed the intensive online course and was very satisfied. The curriculum is based on research and best practices which gave me confidence in the quality of the training. My instructor was very responsive and, in fact, gave me advice as I applied for my first TEFL job during our course. The assignments do require substantial work as they should for this qualification.
