Hi Diane, Indeed the tags you ordered have debossed text, where the characters are pressed into the metal. Debossed text was originally meant to be used to make carbon copies of the soldier's information onto medical records. It is harder to read which is why the military changed to using embossed text, which is much easier to read. Many of our veteran customers or their families will choose to have tags made using embossed text. Even though it is not historically accurate to the original tags they are recreating they prefer the ease of reading.
