I recently renewed my Jazz Piano Method subscription after opting out for a couple of years. I had been overwhelmed by the volume of teaching material that is available through this subscription. Now, instead of trying to cover it all, I am focussing on a tiny fraction of it but very much in-depth. This is really paying off for me I think because I am concentrating only on those areas that I want to improve the most. The beauty of having such a wide range of pedagogical material available is knowing you will find what you need amongst it. Also, the quality of the teaching is second to none in my opinion.

I’m happy to see there is a way to learn music. It’s clear and it gives me hope to play one day the music I like. Thank you very much!

Great content, and the site/platform in general works very well! My only suggestion is Soundslice related: would be great if the position in the video per lesson is persisted across page reloads. Sometimes Safari on iPad forcefully reloads a page after I open it after a few days, and the position in the video is lost. I also haven't found a way to get full screen video only, I always see the sheet music score on the right; although I can at least drag the divider to make it small.

I am a come again trumpet player. After an all too long hiatus, I got a quality horn and armed myself with a new copy of the Arban bible. Not being enough I started watching the wonderful Open Studio shorts on You Tube. I also started seeking out guidance for my practice by the different offerings on-line for trumpet instruction. Then I looked to what Open Studio had beyond the shorts on You Tube. There is a dedicated trumpet course. Not only that but one of my favorite trumpet players, Sean Jones, is the professor for all the courses. I quickly put up my money and am very glad I did. Sean Jones is unbelievable! Not all great musicians or artists of any kind are good teachers. Conversely, not all great teachers are great musicians. Sean Jones is that rarity of being a GREAT MUSICIAN & a GREAT TEACHER! I look forward to my daily sessions with Sean Jones then my practice based on what I have just learned. Few things are of value in this era. Open Studio is of value!

i'm going slower than what i'd like. (it's on me). overall the approach looks very 'sound' (pardon the pun). ear training is difficult for me. I feel like I always mess up - but i keep at it. I got an app "functional ear training" - the Alain Benbassat method to assist. I'm debating if I should purchase the guide book. I recently had a stroke and dexterity in my left hand is less than stellar.

Having real teacher is the ultimate level when it comes to learning but if it is impossible - OpenStudio is the ultimate solution. Initially it was too "advanced" for me because I had zero piano background whatsoever but after one year it got completely accessible to me. I'll be playing decent jazz within 10 years of self-training and that is completely doable for middle aged (I'm into late 40s now) corporate employee. I'm technology lead and IT architect in one of those bigger banks. Considering technicalities - all works as expected, lessons are available without interruptions pretty much always. Even those older materials are very good indeed. Adrian

I have played instruments for years but I don't think I ever studied music. Because of the investment I have made in Open Studio, I am now really studying music. I am simply doing it because I love music and I want to know more. My goal is to be able to hear popular music and play it by ear. I am well on my way with Adam and Peter.

My experience with Open Studio has been great. Very well designed website with easy to find subjects separated through levels of experience. Very good videos with awesome explanations that make a hard to grasp subject look easy. I would certainly recomend to a friend.

Open Studio makes learning jazz piano a joy. I have long searched for a teacher and this resource has the finest, as well as tons of excellent examples in the teaching material and really helpful notation right where and when you need it - the thing I love the most has to be Adam and Peter’s charisma and their genuine love for the music. Thank you Open Studio for all the things you are!

Une méthode accessible et complète pour nous guider, même pour des musiciens non anglophones. Adam et Peter sont des pédagogues hors-pair et avec énormément de bagou ! Prochaine étape une masterclass en France à la « j’irai dormir chez vous »?

I come to Open Studio with a background as a professionally trained jazz drummer, having performed for over 25 years, and a graduate of an elite jazz school. My intention was to elevate my piano playing skills, and while I found some value in the lessons, I have reservations that lead me to give a rating of 3 stars. The content indeed offered insights, but the speed at which the lessons are conducted presented challenges. A lack of provided fingerings and an overall 'rushed' atmosphere detracted from what I hoped would be a more focused and refined experience. While I recognize and appreciate the culture and vibe of jazz instruction, I mean I lived it for a large part of my life as a drummer, my expectations were aligned with something more meticulous in its approach. I've noticed that several comments under the lessons resonate with my sentiments, lending further credence to my observations. I believe the piano courses could benefit from adopting a more intentional pedagogical approach, aligning the instruction with the needs and expectations of learners at varying skill levels

Adam Maness is a top-notch teacher, a natural who's able to inject a little humor in key spots for what could easily become a dry topic. The "play it with me" nudges are genuine, and make the content immediately useful because of the engagement it generates from the viewer. (Really, walk to your instrument instead of passively watching that latest 6th diminished scale video on YouTube, and "play it with him!") It'll change your game. Thanks, Adam, and everyone at Open Studio, for the great content.

I don't know where to find all the scales that Peter talks about. Are they written down somewhere?

Hi Lynn, First off, welcome to Open Studio! You may be referring to the etudes the Peter demonstrates in the Essential Jazz Piano Etudes course that you can find on your course dashboard here--> https://www.openstudiojazz.com/view/courses/27-essential-jazz-piano-etudes They are written out in a downloadable workbook. I'm a huge fan! Adam teaches so clearly and with such enthusiasm. And the supplemental pdf workbooks are the perfect complement. Truly feel I am getting great value for my money. Thank you!

The content is fantastic, as a classical pianist, it was easy to bridge my knowledge and be as efficient as possible in learning jazz. Adam is also a great teacher. The only problems I've found is that soundslice doesn't really harmonize too well with keyboard shortcuts. Being able to skip 10 seconds forward or back would be such a game changer!! Also the course overview is not really that personalized. How about a quick little quiz that defines your level right after first logging into open Studio, so that appropriate content is recommended. I spent a lot of time on the elements of jazz course when I really didn't need to...

Hi Tim, Thanks for taking the time to review. Soundslice does have some keyboard shortcuts that you can see here (https://www.soundslice.com/help/en/player/tips/1/keyboard-shortcuts/), but I'll pass your suggestion along to them for a quick rewind/ff. I can see how that would be useful. We are in the process of developing a brand new site and we will definitely be implementing your quiz idea to help people get started on the right path. Happy practicing! Dan Martin co-founder, Open Studio
