Hello, there is one critical design flaw that prevents me from giving full stars. The underside area around the showerhead is plastic and has exposed screws. The steam and condensation that builds up around the shower head during brewing causes water to build up on the plastic underside and drop into your coffee during brewing. As i bought this to have the most minimal contact between my coffee and plastic, it is disappointing. To help this I wrapped foil around the showerhead area and made a cut out for the shower head. This had helped allow the condensation to build up on the foil rather than the plastic. However this is a pretty big eye sore on my nearly $700 coffee maker. My wife thinks it’s hideous and is not thrilled about it. I would love if ratio would have an actual stainless steel piece fabricated that could slip over and around the shower head area so that don’t have hot water building up and perspiring off the plastic underside into my coffee. I would happily pay for this to have a more seamless user experience and remedy the aesthetics of my beautiful machine. Please consider having a stainless steel piece fabricated! Thank you

The power cord has no positive engagement into the device. If I don’t have the back pushed up against the counter backsplash, it falls out. The oval start button is horribly positioned and sensitive to touch, especially for my under counter location. I’ve contacted in in error three times during the first two weeks I’ve owned the device when I was pushing the basket past its detent to secure in place. The black on black design contributes to that. I plan to make a light grey decal that outlines the button so I can see it better. Beyond these flaws, I love the coffee it makes, the functionality, the streamlined design, and how easy it is to keep clean.

Why is creating a carafe that pours properly so hard? Want to love my Ratio but think I made the wrong purchase.

I would not recommend this model to anyone. Being a backer and patiently waiting for this machine to be built I was disappointed in the outcome. The cheaper price reflects what you get. There are small things which I question how it passed to be "high quality". There are a few which I noticed right away. It is not small. The base is wider than the Ratio Six And that does not include the extra base needed to hold the water. So it takes up much more counter space which is one of the reasons I chose to get the Four is to save space. It's got a big base for a small carafe. The water tank should have been incorporated. It is super light. Light to the point of it sliding on the counter when inserting and removing the filter tray. When you push it in to get past the tabs to hold it it will tip backwards. It only has three very small rubber feet. The water base also has the same small rubber feet. That is not a big deal however when I first picked up the water container, the base come along with it and then fell off and hit the counter. It did that two or three times I guess it's a little more broken in now but still need to be careful because it still lifts up slightly. A couple minor things is the water container lid barely has a ridge on it to stay on and loose so another couple times I used it picking it up not being really careful the lid falls off. The water container is labeled as 0.6L and 1 cup divisions. But, their description is in ounces as well as just about every coffee cup and Tumblr. So I don't know why they couldn't label it in ounces makes no sense to me. This could very by person but one thing for me that I have to get used to is when pulling out the filter basket, I have to make sure not to naturally push with my thumb because the button is placed in that same area. Therefore at times I'll have to shut it off so it stops trying to brew with nothing ready. Personally I'm not a fan of the plastic basket either because chemicals are released when heat is introduced to plastic. That was one of the main reasons I went with ratio when I heard the internals are a glass and stainless steel. With this Four I question if that is true. The lid for the carafe it comes with I think is pointless. The idea of the four is for a single serve maybe two so why would you need a lid for it? The positive things I do really like the smoked carafe and the black satin looking housing. So yes a lot of these things are small and depending on the person but for said premium coffee maker, those things don't seem to have been researched and tested very well at all. I would highly recommend the Six over the Four if you are set on the Ratio brand.

I have tried other paper filters and none of them compare to Ratio filters, always a great cup of coffee

Considering that Ration Six brews wonderful coffee, and was priced accordingly, the Series 1 Thermal Carafe was an outright failure; hard to use, with a lousy pour -- would have been a disgrace on a Mr. Coffee. Series 2: Ratio had fixed the mechanical design problems, so it handles and pours well. Not sure how "thermal" it still is not. Should we expect hot coffee a half-hour after brewing? Probably yes in a $75 thermal carafe.

We like the quality and materials. We were looking for something without plastic and this fits that requirement. However the design of the dripper is terrible. It has a very wide hole at the base which means the paper coffee cone is not supported and breaks about 50% of the time, causing coffee grounds to fall into the coffee. It’s been a disappointment.

I love how easy it is! It creates a great flavored coffee with less work than a normal pour over. I’d recommend the ratio 4 for any coffee lover, that wants a little easier, pour over system and only needs to make coffee for one to two people.

Overall, I'm happy with the quality of the coffee produced. Having said so, there are two significant and frustrating design flaws. First, there is no on/off switch. The manual literally tells you to unplug the machine when not in use, because somehow the product team decided that this is how people like to use kitchen appliances. The second problem is that the button to start the machine – which activates at a light touch – is exactly where you want to place your thumb to help pull out the coffee basket / grounds. Because there isn't an on/off button, and there's apparently no way to stop the cycle once it starts, this means that you have to unplug the coffee maker just to get it to stop. I also haven't been able to use the carafe, since the coffee gets cold when it goes into the glass container. The carafe's rubberized bottom is nice, but it makes it impossible to have a hot plate under the carafe to keep things hot (or to microwave the coffee in the carafe). All of these have workarounds, but they're annoying own-goals on what's a moderately expensive coffee maker.

Thanks for the feedback! A few things: 1. The Start button doubles as an off/on switch, and if you accidentally turn it on, holding for 2 seconds will turn it back off! 2. For safety certification reasons the manual says to leave it unplugged when not in use. None of us do that with our own units, so you can read this as an *highly* risk-avoidant suggestion. If there is no water in the tank, the machine will not brew, and it is fully "off" when not brewing. 3. We've optimized the temperature for best possible extraction and taste of the coffee. Here’s a quick tip: If you add an extra inch of water to the tank beyond what you want to brew, turn on machine and let it deliver water until it hits your desired fill line, then turn off and dump the water, you’ll increase the brewed coffee by 6 degrees or so. It’s pretty fast, and you can be prepping the ground coffee while it’s doing this. Just press Start button for 2 seconds to turn it off, add coffee, and turn back on. Heating element, supply lines, shower head, and carafe will all get heated up. You can do 2 inches if you want even more heat. 4. The carafe is absolutely microwave safe! Let us know any questions or ways we can assist, and thanks again for the feedback.

Sadly the only Hario V60 02 that will work is the glass one which is 95mm. The plastic one is 102mm and does not work (too tall). Customer service excellent as usual.

The coffee tastes horrible. I have tried every combination of grind, etc. I have used pour over makers before as well as French press. This one is the worst. Coffee is weak and under-flavored. No amount of changing the grind or adding extra coffee works. Not worth the $$ at all. Especially after waiting months to receive it.

Hey Toni! We're here to help! The first thing to check is your paper filters - are you using Melitta? We would like to send you some of our filters which we believe lead to better tasting coffee. Also would love to know how much coffee you're using and what kind of grinder. We think we can get you into some great tasting coffee with some small tweaks, but if not we have a 30 day "love it" guarantee. Please email us and we'll get you some filters at no charge! hello@ratiocoffee.com

I was excited to finally receive the Ratio 4 after a long wait but unfortunately it was a major disappointment. The machine has a high pitch tone when it starts brewing. The placement of the power button is annoying and constantly is accidentally touched and activated when you remove or put back the basket. Lastly, when I put in my cream the coffee was too cold which when I normally do a pour over at 204 it’s perfect with cream. So it brews too cool. Also, customer service has been totally non responsive! I will be returning this machine if they ever will acknowledge my email.

Hi Mark, how are you? Thank you for my R4 unit. From my initial 2x brews, I the R4 makes a decent cup of coffee (6 out of 10 rating). I noticed the water spouts are not consistent and pours uneven both times so far. I’m hoping It works better the next couple brews and will take of video. Cheers, TimWYoung
