Car broke down in the middle of nowhere with my disabled grandson, phoned AA for five hours and no answer, answer phone said 'use AA app'. Not everyone has a smartphone , for those that do there is often no signal. If the AA cannot answer a phone call during an emergency breakdown then what's the point of being a member?

Thursday morning car dead....called AA, told expected time for recovery 45mins....still waiting 36 hours later, they can't find a garage to come out and they don't have a patrol vehicle nearby. I have now asked they arrange a hire vehicle. I am pretty sure they keep me waiting until I get to a point where I arrange my own recovery and then cancel the job with them...but I won't, the longer I wait the longer my complaint will be. They are also a bunch of liars...I asked which garages they called, it was obvious they were reading of a list. I called one of these garages, which is less than 10 miles away and they said they have recovery staff available and the AA have not requested their services to come to my car. Broke down today. Stranded at the side of the road with my motorbike. Called the AA, but was told there would be 20 minute wait before getting an answer. Battery was low on the phone and knew it was unlikely to last the time plus the ensuing call so had to prioritise letting people know where I was etc. When you’ve broken down, you need help, not hindrance. 4 hours later I made the 5 mile trip back home with proper help from a friend who had to put himself well out to attend. It scares me to think how the AA would handle a situation where my wife and daughter were stuck with a breakdown. 40 ish years with the AA and just 4 times needed help. Not at all happy.

I've been paying for roadside assist for a year and a half. My car broke down at the side of the motorway at 2am and after calling the AA and waiting for an hour, the AA called back to say there was nobody available to help me. I had to pay for a private tow and for a taxi home. I have tried to contact them and have not had a response in over a week.

Services are awful with waiting times nearly 2 hours. To cap it all we bought a part from AA £245)and their engineer didn’t even fit part in properly causing us to have another breakdown with another 2hrs wait. I have been with AA for 20years. Wont be renewing again

Had fleet cover for 8 vehicles which for the first year was a fair price. Never used them in that first year then on renewal the fees more than doubled. The AA then kept chasing me to try and get to renew my premium even though I told them I did not want to renew. 3 further calls, 5 emails and 2 texts later I called them and threatened with a formal complaint if they didn't;t stop these unsolicited calls and emails.

Been with them 5 years and used them 2/3 times a year. The worst problem is the wait and talking to a app/computer. At home service each time waited 2 hours. Broke down with failed clutch at 9pm on a Friday night and was text back the wait would be 5/6 hours. This was on the outskirts of Liverpool UK. Cancelled them and got taxi home. Went back the next morning at 8am and waited till 11.45am to be towed to a garage. The last time the macanic hit the engine with a hammer to try and start it !!!!!. I'm due for a renewal and going back to Green Flag as they use local garages to collect you and if they can't fix it then they put you on the back of a load loader., and take you to a garage of your choice or home. There time is within the hour. AA is now rubbish and not worth using. Drove past a guy broken down at the local traffic lights at 8pm, past again at 21.45pm (still there) and then drove past on the way home at 23.30pm , stopped at lights just as the AA van pulled up beside me ! 3 1/2 hours !!!

AA in my opinion could care less about customer service! Just had 4 flights and on ALL flights attendants were awful. We also had a connecting flight canceled. We never were told why. Just told you get no compensation figure it out yourself! Standing in a line of several hundred people in the same fate, we paid for a rental car and hotel room for hundreds! I will NEVER fly AA again!!! WORST AIRLINE EVER

Service good as their word. Affordable, should be required coverage for all.

Protracted duration prior to talking to someone, other than a bloody machine. The person who tried to assist was clearly mentally challenged with the simplicity of understanding basic English and completely at odds when I explained what I needed as opposed to being towed, (at cost). Incidentally, my membership covers me for nearly everything, so this was yet another issue that I would have had to relay to the imbecile. My membership will be due for renewal very soon. Post this torrid event I’ll be seeking other options.

Everything, every single thing, staff are unhelpful in every department. My accident claim is still not settled 9months on, no one want to help rectify the situation. The accident was not my fault but it's listed as at fault.

4.5 hours for someone to check the car and not be able to tow it even though we repeatedly told them the cars gear box has gone and would have to be towed. They had no one available after all that time therefore we had to wait further 2 hours for a taxi (arrived 1am) to be told we have to get back to the vehicle tomorrow morning, in 6 hours time. Absolute joke!

Lone female with young child, abandoned after waiting from midday to 6.30pm to be collected from dangerous verge of motorway after traumatic accident! Yesterday I had to call AA, with whom I thought we were covered for accident and breakdowns. We had a crash at 11.45am in the fast lane of the M4, due to sudden braking of several cars in front of us. Our engine got crumpled and I managed to get it into the hard shoulder. AA said they would come within an hour and it would cost £375 (!) which we would probably get back from insurance. Later, I was to find out that it is pointless calling the AA for accidents and that your insurance can sort it all out much quicker. However, I didn't know that at the time and my (not present) partner said to just go ahead with AA. 2 hours went by. No one called to update me at any point, even though they promised they would.. Another hour, and another. I chased them and was given their 3rd party rescue company's number. Curt and unhelpful, they said another 2 hours. After 5.5 hours in total of waiting on a steep noisy slope behind the barrier near my crashed car, I called again - this time, the 3rd party tow vehicle had broken down and they'd told AA this 30 mins ago. The job had been cancelled. Nobody - neither AA nor the 3rd party rescue company, bothered to call me and tell me. I called AA again - 20 mins on hold before someone answered, my son extremely upset by this point, my battery running out - they had no idea what was going on but would look at new options for me - and it took another 40 mins before they called back to say they had ZERO options for me. Great, thanks a lot AA. I've paid you £375, waited hours and hours in a dangerous place, and you are completely incapable of doing the job I've paid you for. Then - £75 cancellation fee - which I am supposing we won't get charged since effectively they cancelled us. Eventually our insurance company sorted out a priority rescue vehicle to tow us within 25 mins. Moral of the story: don't bother with AA membership, no point. They should be refunding us the membership fee AND recompensing me 6 hours of wasted time and trauma!

For many years I said one classic British company that remained true to its values and high quality was the AA. Whilst British Gas was terrible and British Airways wouldn’t give water to its passengers unless they pay, the AA had quick response times and it was easy to speak to someone. That has changed. Although the roadside support is still really good it is nearly impossible to reach someone on the phone when you need assistance. Again when you reach someone they are good and helpful but just stretched too thin. Registering online is not nuanced enough and sometimes you just need to speak to someone - to hear every time that there is unprecedented demand is not acceptable. Please staff appropriately and return to the institution we were used to.

Broke down 1200 on Sunday, eventually someone came out 2 hours later and said it was the cambelt. As we had our caravan had to wait further 4 hours for a recovery vehicle who took us 40 miles of the 200 miles back home. Next recovery vehicle turned up at 1345 the next day after we had stayed in a travel lodge for the night, he only took us a further 27 miles, after waiting for another 4 hours the AA paid for a taxi back to our home. It's now 105 hours since our breakdown and we're still waiting for our car and caravan to be bought home. Rang the AA yesterday (3 times) and today (4 times) and each time was given a different eta of said car & caravan. Not once have the AA rung me and inform me of when they would eventually be returned and we have no idea where they are. Will be cancelling my 15 year membership that's for sure and I would advise anyone to not touch the AA with a barge pole.

Awful so far. We broke down at 5:30pm on Saturday, 15 minutes from our rural gite on the way to get food after an eight hour journey. It took 30 minutes for our breakdown call to be answered and we were immediately told that in France nothing is fixed at the breakdown (should have read the policy more carefully) - all they could offer was for the car to be towed to storage to wait until Tuesday when it would be taken to a garage and get us a taxi back to the gite. When we mentioned a hire car we were told that the policy made it clear that it was only if one was available and nothing would be until after the bank holiday weekend (should have read the policy more carefully). When we said could they book us a taxi for after we had managed to get some shopping (as we had no food in and were in the middle of nowehere) they said it would be faster for us to sort that ourselves (was that in the policy???) and they'd reimburse us once we got back to England. So we had to sort ourselves out. Sunday, another 30 minute wait to book a taxi for Monday to get more food. Tuesday - an 80 minute wait to bd told the car wouldn't be looked at till Friday and, as if said in our policy documents, a hire car wasn't guarunteed. Again, the woman said it would be quicker to sort it ourselves. "So what exactly are we paying the AA for then, if we have to do everything ourselves?" She laughed - obviously thought I was joking. I'm not. Three days in France. No car and still no sign of having any transport in the near future. If you're considering AA European Breakdown cover, my advice would be to READ THE SMALL PRINT VERY CAREFULLY and then GO WITH SOMEONE ELSE!!!
