I was one of AHOY’s first Activity Leadership apprentices in October 2013 and the programme definitely changed my life because it gave me a career path. I’ve been working as a full-time freelance Instructor @ AHOY for over a year now and really enjoy helping the new apprentices to change their lives too

“I nominated The AHOY Centre as charity of the year in 2015 in my capacity as President of The Anchorites. I have visited the centre several times and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting their staff and beneficiaries - it is wonderful to be able to see at first hand where our fundraising is being spent and the difference they are making to young lives. They even inspired and trained a team of Anchorites to row the 23 miles in the Great River Race!” Jean Richards Quantum Shipping Services Ltd

“I joined The AHOY’s Activity Leadership apprenticeship programme in June 2014 and learnt so much during the year long course. I was bullied at school and I’ve had anger management problems since I was young. Then I started hanging around with the wrong people and getting into trouble with the police. At first I was really nervous coming to AHOY but everyone was so friendly and the atmosphere was so good that after a couple of days it felt so right and I felt at home. I now work for the charity as a full-time freelance Dinghy Instructor and it is great to be able to use my new skills to help others learn and achieve”

I have been a volunteer at Ahoy since the beginning and was involved with the construction of the original building. Through all the years of being part of the Ahoy I have seen at first hand the excellent work they do and the results that they have achieved with young people that need a helping hand in life. The results and achievements are outstanding, I am very proud to be a volunteer at Ahoy. Bob Lawrence

Spending a volunteering day at the Ahoy Centre was a truly humbling experience. Everyone at AHOY should be very proud of themselves - I can see they are making a big difference to peoples’ lives.

“All the young people who engage in your projects have been excluded from mainstream school. Many have emotional and behavioural difficulties. AHOY provides a fantastic enrichment opportunity for young people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and we have seen improved attendance and punctuality, organisational skills, social and personal development, promotion of physical fitness and teamwork. It has been an absolute pleasure working with all the instructors and volunteers at AHOY who have an amazing way of ensuring that the young people feel at ease when they are out of their 'comfort zone' and are prepared to build positive relationships in order to make sure that the young people reach their full potential.”

The first time I came to the AHOY was with my primary school and we came and did a power boat trip to Tower Bridge. After that I joined their youth programme called Shipmates and stayed for 7 years and I passed my RYA sailing stages 1 to 4, my Powerboat 1 & 2 and safety boat. I also became more confident when speaking to and teaching others. After I finished Shipmates the charity gave me the opportunity to become a full time staff member so I am now working 5 day a week maintaining their fleet of boats and teaching the Shipmates, apprentices, Sailability students and the school programmes. If it wasn't for the AHOY I'd be on the streets getting into mischief but I am now a RYA Dinghy and Powerboat instructor and currently working on getting to Senior Instructor level and when I do I’ll be able to lead sessions. All thanks to AHOY for giving me a career.

“In 2015 a community team made up of Lewisham police officers and young people from the borough rowed the English Channel raising vital funding for several local charities. The training and event was managed by The AHOY Centre Charity which gave us the opportunity to meet with their staff, participants and beneficiaries. AHOY’s work to divert young people away from crime & improve anti-social behaviour is outstanding and by engaging them in something positive will deter them from crime.”’ Inspector Mick Chattenton

“Thanks to all the team at AHOY for organising our Meridian Pull - what a very special way to see central London’s iconic landmarks. The enjoyment and sense of achievement that everyone got from our row left us all ‘buzzing’ – as well as being so pleased that our efforts were helping to raise funds for such a worthwhile charity at the same time. If you want an amazing experience (and the challenge of beating our course record of 48min 7sec), get a crew together and sign up with AHOY now!"

I did a corporate volunteering day @ The AHOY Centre in November 2015 - what a hidden gem The AHOY Centre is! I was so pleased to help and contribute to a great cause. Because I'm a resident in Lewisham Council it was even more important to me that support continues for this community asset.

Becoming involved with the AHOY makes so much difference to the lives of many disabled and ‘at risk’ groups who are given the chance to become involved and motivated, focusing their minds and providing channels for their energy within an exciting environment. Having a daughter with special educational needs, who has attended the centre since 2010, I can verify that AHOY’s Sailability Programme and indeed being a volunteer, has done wonders for her confidence, skills set and social maturity. Allowing her independence, an opportunity to try something different and all within a safe, inclusive environment.”

Our experience of working with AHOY has been outstanding. The commitment of their team is evident at all stages. All the children thoroughly enjoyed their time and many said it was the best thing they have ever done. There were so many children who “shone” and many of these were vulnerable children. There is something very special going on at the AHOY and I would recommend to everyone to pop down and have a look. The quality of the staff and volunteers combined with the excitement of sailing on the Thames leads to life-changing experiences. You really do see your most vulnerable children redefining themselves as learners and achiever

The Ahoy is the chosen charity of Lloyd's (of London) Yacht Club. Our main fundraiser is an auction to raise money for AHOY. We chose to support AHOY not for only for the great work that they do but because we know that the funds we raise go directly to supporting young disadvantaged people. Through their policy of asking Supporters & Donors to come to AHOY to see and meet with the people they are working with gives us the comfort that the money raised is going directly to those that need it most.
