My guide Christina was awesome, so informative and always available. All accommodation was good, just be prepared to walk up steps with your bags, I highly recommend backpacks not suitcases. In regards to the Inca Trail, they tell you to take snacks for the trail, our company gives you fruit and crackers as snacks for the trail and I found that I only had a few muesli bars just for a sugar and salt hit along the walk. A tip for the trail is 'layers', as you travel around you will see the leg warmers, gloves and beanies for sale, it is good to get these for the trek, as they are easy to take off as you walk. Also pack your thermals to sleep in, they are warm and small. I loved all the places we went in Peru, and Bolivia with Tucan Travel, and recommend them to everyone.

The Massons had a fantastic time with Tucan Travel in South America in Summer 2013. We were celebrating our 50th Birthdays and traveled with our two boys (14 and 11) in 3 countries - Ecuador, Peru and Brazil as well as the Galapagos Islands and had plenty of unforgettable experiences...the highlights were: Ecuador - Quito, a beautiful city, plenty of hills and zig-zag bends to get in and out of the city, Tucan organised a great hotel for us and daily & overnight excursions. The highlights were visiting the Equator line which was really fascinating for our boys, they loved all the little experiments during the tour. We also had an overnight stay at a Hacienda, and a visit to a Rose factory where we were able to see beautiful Roses picked and packed and made ready for shipping all over the world! Hammering down the Pan American Highway in our minivan was great, you just need to avoid the occasional animal which strays onto bits of the road....... Galapagos Islands - what can you say? you wont be disappointed, David Attenborough is one thing, seeing the wildlife for real is another! We stayed in the Finch Bay hotel, on Santa Cruz Island which was lovely, the staff there were very friendly and organised two excursions for us on their boats. We had a guide each day who was able to point out all the fantastic sea and bird life and one of the highlights was our 11 year old popping his head out of the water and shouting that he had just swum with a shark! The Giant Tortoises were great too, Tucan had organised a visit for us to a private reserve where we were able to walk amongst them, this was much better than the Darwin Station which was more like a small zoo. We saw plenty of Blue Footed boobies (our 14 year old thought this was very funny), Frigate birds, Marine and Land Iguanas, and so on.......a great destination, if you are in Ecuador then you can't miss the Galapagos (Tucan's advice, and they were right). On to Peru, Tucan had organised our flights and transfers, all went very smoothly. We were tired in Lima, so only saw the beach area and one evening there, but we liked this city which despite its immense size had a old world feel about it. And about a zillion cars as well, allow plenty of time to and from the airport. We then flew down to Puerto Maldonado, the heart of the Amazon - what a place, you really feel isolated............ then we went 35 kilometres up river! (passing deep jungle and wildlife along the way) ending up at the Eco Amazonia Lodge. They were all ready for us and we had a meal right away before heading out on our first Jungle walk. This was hilarious as we went to Monkey Island and were greeted by lots of welcoming Monkeys who were fun to watch.....then after dinner we went on a small boat out onto the river and floated in silence along the Amazon at night in the moonlight, a moment we will all remember, it was beautiful. More jungle hiking the next day, we went in the dry season so the going was easy and far fewer Mozzies were about (but do wear long trousers and sleeves). The Guide was excellent and pointed out all manner of things - which included eating live small bugs from inside of some sort of nut, which our smaller boy loved! The lodge was well organised, the food fine, bar open in the evening with table tennis and pool, staff very welcoming and the accommodation absolutely fine (you are in the jungle after all). On then from the Jungle to Machu Picchu (MP) we were accompanied by Tucan and Cusco's one and only Alex, the most informed Guide we've ever met. Alex took us everywhere, and made sure we were always just ahead of the crowd, beating queues, he got tickets, stamps, seats, restaurants, you name it, he sorted it for us, he was brilliant! We arrived in Aguas Calientes at the bottom of MP at night and awoke to the roar of the river - what a sight and noise, then scooted up the mountain in a bus at 6am, and Alex did his stuff for us over the next 3 hours. Its a beautiful sight and not to be missed. We had arrived there via the Sacred Valley where we visited some lovely markets and a great animal rescue centre where we saw a Condor up close. Back in Cusco, the team at Tucan ( Rolf and crew) had found us another great hotel and we were well briefed on what to do and see there, Cusco is a beautiful city with great markets and and fantastic restaurants, try the Fallen Angel for something different.......we were all fine with the altitude, though got a bit short of breath on hills. Tucan had then organsied transfers for us onto Brazil where we traveled on our own but having taken advice on where to go...... It was a great holiday, well organised from start to finish and we're very happy to have traveled with the Tucan Team. The Masson Family Summer 2013

i really enjoyed my holiday (mayan circle through mexico, guatemala and belize). i haven't done anything like this since my student days and was travelling on my own. i'm 50. we had a great itinerary and although it certainly says that many trips are optional i don't think that i had quite appreciated the magnitude of the extra expense. some of the trips were also charged at a premium compared with other operators - we paid twice as much to see whale sharks for example as some other people on the same boat. it was a keenly priced trip and some of the accommodation reflected this at very much the economy end of the spectrum. overall i would recommend but with qualifications and i would advise seeklng out alternatives for the optional trips and saving some money - i would not accept the advice of the tour guide at face value

We had a fantastic time. Our guides very great with particular focus on Hernan and Ruben. Hernan was incredibly knowledgeable and a really great guy to be around.

Everything went according to plan and my only criticism would be of the guide provided at Machu Picchu who expected us to wait for 1 hour for some reason. Went off and did it on our own

I felt it was overpriced for what I got. With the price I paid there should have been 3 meals a day also provided.

The trip itself i.e. the itinerary, route taken and activities included was as expected. What was poor was the lack of information from our guide. This is from the start of the day to the end of the day, even when arriving at a destination and still no information was given. No instructions as to how long we would be staying at each point or what the finish time and meeting point is. Sometimes other people in the group had to wait up to an hour for the rest of the group to get back because no specific time was given for the end of the excursion. It may well be that the guide communicated poorly due lack of English. The person who was organising the trip should have been the guide as her English was clear and concise as she took the welcome meeting. The guide never said a word at this meeting which should have given us a clue.

I was very impressed with the tour! The quality of the excursions, the standard of the accommodation and the awesome tour leader made it a trip I will always remember. Everything was as advertised, if not better!

This is the second tour I have done with Tucan. The tour leader was good but half way through another girl training to be a leader joined us and she was so useless (she'd never been a tour leader anywhere before) and she was doing the trip by herself right after ours (was not an easy trip through Europe or anything either). Was disappointed there were people in their late 70s on the trip also- they could not keep up with the group.

I was very please with the entire trip. I enjoyed the camping and the places we visited. There was enough time to do the things I wanted to do and see the different towns. Also, enough time to enjoy the countryside.

The trip leader and co leader were well organized, polite, and friendly. They made the trip a pleasant experience. It was a plus that they were fluent in the language of the country and we could go to them for help anytime. I am talking about Becky and Helen. I liked the Itinerary because we could learn about the people and country while also having fun moments. If I choose to take another trip next summer I would mostly likely book with Tucan Travel.

Outstanding service throughout the booking procedure. All of the trip was extremely well organised and structured. But by far the best thing about Tucan was the guide on our trip. Nikki Self was absolutely fantastic!! Extremely knowledgeable, friendly and great fun, she really made the tour! Would, and probably will, book again with Tucan! Loved it!

I enjoyed my trip with Tucan. I think our Central America itinerary was great, our guide was very helpful, the accommodation was of a good standard. I would recommend the company to others and am going to travel with Tucan again. Of course, it is a budget trip and people should adjust expectations accordingly and enjoy a bit of adventure.

This was my first holiday travelling alone. I joined the Jewels of Croatia tour and was made to feel very welcome by Louise. The tour was well organised and ran smoothly. Hvar had excellent rooms and it was really nice to stay with the locals. The accommodation was all reasonable with the exception of the location of the hostel & quality of the mattresses at the hostel in Korcula and the movie hotel in Zagreb, was not the best location or quality. I would say that although it is advertised as a budget holiday by the time I'd bought my flights, food, transfers etc, which are not included in the Tucan price it was not budget, and other companies which use higher standards of accommodation and include meals actually are comparable in price. Having said that I met a lovely group of people, Louise was a fantastic tour leader and I would consider Tucan again.

We had à great experience. Our tour was fantastic, well-organised, accommodation was comfortable, our guides were interesting and competent and in general, it was good value for money as most things were included. The only thing we didnt like was that we were expected, more often than we would havé liked to give tips and buy from the locals. We are happy to do this but we didnt like feeling à bit forced to do so. Otherwise, we had à great trip. The amazon was amazing and the night with a local family in Lake Titicaca was just incredible.

All of the arrangements beforehand were well done from Sydney. The hotels at the different places were very clean and tidy, - and the staff were courteous. The tour guide was a local, - and knew his country very well. He knew the history of the places we visited. I would recommend this tour company for anyone looking to visit South America. Leo Burke.

tucan, not as good as comes across. the management need to make sure that their tour guides are provided with sufficient information to provide their clients or send to their clients before they arrive. Trouble with getting maps when arrived and lack of knowledge and assumption by clients can prevail. And tell their staff not to bring/or have friends along, even if they assist paying for some of the costs. The distracted from tour guide on our trip a bit. the friends were nice but felt the tour person was not as good as before they arrived. . The tour person also always tended to take the group to a place they picked for most meals, and whoppy they never paid, this occurs a lot. A lot of the places on the tour are not included, be careful with what is and is and isn't included. The company representative with the tour was advised about some things, such as where to hire bikes etc. sometimes these sought of things were not good bikes to ride/ or broke down. Trouble with organising some public transport with insufficient funds and we were lucky to catch the train, good thing it was late. Most places we stayed were as i expected. The actual places they escorted you to were good. Actually i wouldn't call the tour guides guides as our really didn't. rather directors, telling you where to go and what can be seen in some places. i often found my searching on the computer was a lot better. I have travelled on many such tours but this one let me down. I have travelled with lots of different cultures and sites. My views are mine and is only based on this particular tour, maybe as an older person ( although not the oldest) and having travelled many times before i expected a little bit more.
