About The Thompson Method:

The Thompson Method is a gentle, evidence based method towards a gentle birth and pain-free breastfeeding experience. It was created by Dr Robyn Thompson, a midwife with over 45 years experience who was awarded a PhD for her research into why so many women were being discharged from hospital with painful nipple trauma and other breastfeeding complications such as engorgement & mastitis.

The Thompson Method challenges the forceful breastfeeding techniques, linked with painful nipple trauma, that are commonly taught in most hospitals. It’s for ALL women who want to breastfeed, but particularly those giving birth in the hospital system because it offers a gentle alternative to help women AVOID the most common and painful breastfeeding complications.

But it’s more than just the technique on how to get a good latch. It is that, but it’s so much more...

We made it to 6 months because of this program, before my little guy decided to call it quits, and I am so grateful. Between supply issues and latch issues, it was rough in the beginning. What sold me on this program was the acknowledgment of the trauma and forcefulness of breast feeding in the hospital, and the refreshing, intuitive approach, trusting the baby to know what to do. My supply issues were resolved, and I’ve gone from being an under producer to producing enough to have a daycare stash. We wouldn’t have made it this far, nor had the positive experience we did, without this program. I cannot recommend it enough.

The hold is great if that’s all the advice you take, but all their other advice is terrible. They contradict themselves in videos and at 1-2-1 appointments. Examples: Don’t take a supplement/ but dr t says to drop one in your Donut. Don’t bother pumping to increase supply/ the only way to increase supply is gentle stimulation. Baby will refuse bottle if not hungry/ or no baby will take bottle if given to them. Wait three hours/ but not unless it’s hot out. Told me to get baby feeding every 3 hours- not to slightly increase the times between feeds, so ignoring baby’s cues they were then overly hungry and wouldn’t breastfeed at all. Total set back in bf journey. Baby now screams when put in the Thompson hold.

It took me/us awhile but we’re finally in sync! Thanks to the Thompson Method knowledge I kept trying and we are enjoying our breastfeeding time together 🥰 It’s been such an intense journey to get where we are today and I’m so grateful to Dr Robyn’s life’s work and everyone at the Thompson Method for all the support. I was not going to breastfeed, I told myself, and just so I kept an open mind I bought a book on breastfeeding and the pregnancy hormones made me so emotional thinking about that connection with my future baby. The book mentioned the Thompson Method and I thought it sounded so gentle and baby led that I immediately bought the course. I’m a preschool teacher and am so pro baby led anything. I went into birth so excited about the latch and golden hours, which we got luckily but then it became immediately difficult. I broke down from the pain, nurses were pressuring me and forcing her on me, no one was listening but I knew deep down I wanted to do TTM. I ended up pumping because I was in so much pain and I became a manic mess measuring and making sure she ate the perfect amount (she had high levels of jaundice) and in the back of my mind I knew I needed to keep trying. We kept latching once a day for a few minutes and slowly worked our way up to longer and longer times. I meticulously combed through and checked TTM FB group. Wrote my own drafts of questions but never sent them, then finally we were going to take an international trip and I knew baby girl was going to need us to latch on the plane. I finally wrote my drafts to TTM FB group and Shelley Cook helped so much. I wonder sometimes if I should have kept trying harder earlier, sent those drafts sooner, but I’m happy with our journey and am determined to keep easing into exclusively BF. I still have that fear of her getting enough even though everything says she will. I’m getting there! Baby girl just turned 5 months and some of my favorite moments are when we are breastfeeding and we lock eyes and she smiles and all the milk runs out of her mouth 😂 she is so silly Or when I know the only way she will feel safe and better is when she can latch and I can do that for her. It such a good feeling when she shows signs of wanting to breastfeed and that I have the confidence now to provide that for her. So thank you, and thank you so much to Dr. Robyn 💕

💜 Appreciation post from Ireland💜 I just wanted to say thank you to Dr Robyn and the team for this programme. The information and implementation are wonderful. This is my wee man, Donnacha, 4 weeks old today and my third born. I wish I had this programme for my other two children; one failed and one successful breastfeeding journey. My wee man was delivered by elective Caesarean at 37 weeks due to complications from previous Caesareans. He spent 4 days in NICU and during that time, using the Thompson method for expressing and skin-to-skin helped my little man dramatically, the NICU team were so supportive and I told them about this method. I have recommended it to family and friends who are on or beginning their breastfeeding journey. I know I'm still early on my journey but I just wanted to say thank you for the content and responsiveness of the team. Keep up the great work everyone! 💜

If there was one thing I did that changed my overall pregnancy, birth experience, and breastfeeding it was Dr Thompson Method. So much more than just breastfeeding, it helped me brave enough to follow my own instincts and critically think for myself. Had a beautiful unmedicated birth (switched to midwife mid 2nd trimester), easier birth than I expected. Some complications breastfeeding in the 1st few days, stuck with it, and got the help I needed. EBF till about a year. We breastfed till 2.5 years old. I'm eternally grateful I made an impulse buy that changed my mindset and experience so much for the better. Breastfeeding is not only best nutrition, natural bound, illness/immunity support, jaw development. I returned to work at 12 weeks and had no issues switching between bottles and boob. My husband called it the "placenta" show because the 1st episode he heard he liked how it sounded with the accent hehe.

Just wanted to say thank you... Baby Boy is now almost 5 months old. And the last 2 month of exclusively breastfeeding. We had an rescue session with Dawn Shalom, when he was about 5 weeks old. We were using a nipple shield and had to top up with formula. First we worked on the top ups, so we could use only breast milk. And then we worked on the nipple shield. It took long... but it was worth it. Around 12 weeks old he stopped using the shield🙌🏻 Looking back, it was an incredible journey and I could have never imagined to be at this point we are at now... at some points along the way, I even thought, that we would have to quit breastfeeding. I am so grateful for this program, the support I've got and the rescue session. Thank you all very much for your great work❤️ Carol from Switzerland

Good night, I am here to share my experience so that mommies who may come across this program can feel comfortable trying it. I learned about the Thompson method via a ad on Facebook. I was sceptical at first especially being a first time mom but i wanted to be as educated and prepared as i possibly could be. I went through the materials during my last trimmer of pregnancy and i must say it had an answer for every question you could think of. The videos were really helpful especially when you feel like you are failing you could always go back and watch. My baby did not latch right away, took almost two weeks but with the information i gathered here, my midwives help and a lil persistence she did so on her own time 😂😂😂. The technique definitely helps prevent nipple pain and cracked nipples. If you are thinking about it, definitely do it. Your anxiety will decrease and they respond promptly. That was a surprise. Looking forward to enjoying many months of bonding with my baby. We are one month in. Nessa- from Antigua

Sorry for a long-winded post, but… I bought this program when I was pregnant with my third child, after two failed breastfeeding journeys with my first two. I wasn’t successful with my third, but gave up before reaching out for further guidance. In hindsight, I wish I would have reached out for a rescue session. My fourth is 7 weeks old and I FINALLY have an EBF baby. I had nipple damage after his first feed in the hospital. I spent the first two weeks watching and rewatching the videos. I am so thankful for this program because without it I would have given up again. I am sure we will come across more obstacles along the way, but I know the support in this program will get us through. It still seems surreal that I’m able to feed my baby! ❤️

This is my 4th breastfeeding journey. My last 2 ended due to the pain and low supply. I’ve always seen lactation consultants and always just struggled. I knew there had to be a better way. When I saw an add for the Thompson method I knew immediately that it was an answer to my prayers. So thankful for Rachel and the rescue group. It’s worth every penny!

I just want to say THANK YOU to the team!! I have made it an entire year breastfeeding and I remember those first few months being brutal! There were many a nights I was up and this group was so helpful in answering my questions at all hours! I was gifted this program by a friend for my baby shower and I will continue to gift it forward! Everyone is so encouraging, supportive and knowledgeable! It was so helpful to have links to videos that were relevant to your question AND the time point in the video to reference - this is exactly what I needed at 3a!

I used this program with my second, and it was amazing! I unsuccessfully breastfed my first and had to give up, but even the info provided on growth spurts, introducing solids etc was very helpful with my first. The second time around went so much better, and now that we are at the end of our breastfeeding journey, I can confidently say I will be recommending to others!

Success story! I believe my son is done breastfeeding and I’m so sad and proud of him and of myself really. He is 3 years 2 months (almost) and the last couple days he has told me he just wants to cuddle instead of breastfeeding. I’m proud of him for making this decision for himself but I’m sad he is done at the same time. I didn’t know he was ready to stop so I had no idea our last feed would be our last, but I am still breastfeeding my daughter who is 1 year 2 months old so I’m not done breastfeeding all together! I’m proud of myself for not giving up. It hasn’t always been easy especially while I was pregnant and after giving birth. But he did so well learning to share. I’m going to miss our breastfeeding cuddles but hopefully he will keep cuddling me for a long time to come! Thank you to all who have helped me through the program and issues we ran into along the way! It has been such a blessing to have a support team for this journey! ❤️

Outstanding - I always knew I wanted to breastfeed but didn’t know where to start. I spend my whole pregnancy working my way through the course and it was the best investment I made for myself and baby. I faced the usual challenges but navigated them with confidence and never doubted my ability to nourish my baby. Everyone who wants to breastfeed should do this course, it’s life changing.

My little one turned one today! One year of breastfeeding, one year of seeing them fall asleep at the breast or look for it in the middle of the night. One year of being able to provide emotional support , comfort, safety, connection in this way. One year of seeing them grow in my arms, moment by moment. I feel sooo priviledged and honoured to have been able to persevere through nipple shields and misinformation from the hospital, and large breasts with flat nipples and tripple feeding and supplementing for a bit and weight gain issues and so much crying! I am also so grateful to my child’s perseverance with this first time mama. This program and its people trully saved my breastfeeding journey! I am forever grateful to all the vulnerable mamas, admin staff and in particular to Dawn and Dr Thompson’s kindness and reassurance. You educated me, helped me feel empowered and helped me trust my body and my mama’s instict. Thank you for this gift that will stay with my child through their lifetime. Pilar and baby E.

Here we are! The eve of my baby’s first birthday. I cannot believe how fast this year has gone!! And with The Thompson Method, this has been my smoothest breastfeeding experience of all 4 kids. Although my little man is losing interest in nursing during the day (too busy trying to keep up with his siblings), we have continued to night nurse. I don’t know how much longer this journey will last, but I’m so proud of us for making my goal of a year ❤️❤️ I’d love to add that before using The Thompson Method, I’d seen/done it all. Numerous visits with lactation consultants, cracked, bleeding nipples, clogged ducts, mastitis, low supply, over supply, being diagnosed and treated for Reynaud’s….: seriously if it was a breastfeeding complication you could have, I’ve had it with my first 3 children. Then with number four, I learned The Thompson Method. The gentle technique and the way things are described made SO much sense. It was such a refreshing change. This has by far been my most successful and best experience. I highly recommend The Thompson Method to all of my expecting friends to help them avoid the mistakes I experienced the first few goes. If you are looking for a beautiful breastfeeding journey, buy the course. It was worth every penny ❤️

Today was the first day in almost 29 months that my sweet boy didn’t nurse 🥺 This post is the epitome of bittersweet for me to make (definitely more bitter than sweet). It seems our breastfeeding journey has finally come to an end, and I’m not really ok 😭 Graydon has been weaning himself extremely gradually - going down to just once per day (in the morning when he’d wake up) within the last couple months. This past week he has gone from about 5 minutes to 30 seconds and then this morning, I asked him if he wanted milk and he said “no” 🥺 Breastfeeding has always been something I couldn’t wait to do. Even as a young child with my baby dolls, I would pretend to nurse them 😂 I knew it wasn’t going to be easy in the beginning after all the research I had done and the paid course I took during my pregnancy, and I was so afraid I wouldn’t be able to for some reason. I am so grateful that I was successful and definitely don’t take it for granted. There were some challenges with his latch in the first few weeks and a period of about a week where it was absolutely excruciating but I REFUSED to give up so I just cried in pain every couple hours when he would latch, persevered through the agony, and it did get better. My goal was to make it to 3 years, but I am extremely proud we almost made it 2.5 🥰 I’m confident Graydon will continue to reap the benefits of our breastfeeding journey throughout his life. I know I will always deeply cherish every special moment we shared while nursing and the bond it created. I tried to capture some moments on my phone over the last couple months, since I knew any session could be our last, but it was pretty challenging with an active toddler 🤣 I never ever want to forget this season 🤍🤍🤍

I'm so grateful for the Thompson Method. Just 10 days after my C section, my second baby is breastfeeding beautifully. We had our "3 Golden Hours" right in recovery, and she achieved a perfect latch—something the midwife and ward staff were amazed to see! I've had no breastfeeding pain at all, which I credit entirely to this program. After struggling to breastfeed my first child due to poor advice from lactation consultants and hospital staff, I'm incredibly thankful for the guidance from this program. A huge thanks to Dr. Robyn and the team for enabling the precious bonding experience I've always yearned for.

I really was appreciative of having a resource to support me in my breastfeeding journey. My daughter and I made it 14 months breastfeeding before she self-weaned and we really valued the resources from the Thompson Method, which also empowered my husband to support me through this experience. I really value quantitative data so I kind of struggled with that a bit since the Thompson Method doesn't really provide that, rather mostly anecdotal experiences. Honestly, though, I found it to be a nice change of pace from all the facts and figures presented in motherhood and really encouraged me to learn to trust my gut and understand my rights and follow my own intuition because every mother and baby are different. I'm really thankful I found such an empowering resource.

I had an unplanned c section Saturday evening after laboring without medication for 24 hours 😵‍💫 Turns out this little (big) guy was in a posterior position and 9lbs 10oz! (We had no idea how big he would be!) One of my biggest fears surrounding a possible unplanned c section was breastfeeding. It’s obviously still day 1 of my little guy’s life, but hospital staff respected my plan to implement the Thompson Method even after a c section and I am happy to say we had our skin to skin and golden hours post surgery, and he latched with face symmetry almost immediately 🥹 I may not have had the birth of my dreams, but I am hopeful we can still have a beautiful breastfeeding journey. We’ve got this, c-section mamas!! 🩵 A new nurse on rotation did come by to try and forcefully have him latch even after I’d found success, but I was like no thank you lady! Thank you Thompson Method for empowering me.
