About The Thompson Method:

The Thompson Method is a gentle, evidence based method towards a gentle birth and pain-free breastfeeding experience. It was created by Dr Robyn Thompson, a midwife with over 45 years experience who was awarded a PhD for her research into why so many women were being discharged from hospital with painful nipple trauma and other breastfeeding complications such as engorgement & mastitis.

The Thompson Method challenges the forceful breastfeeding techniques, linked with painful nipple trauma, that are commonly taught in most hospitals. It’s for ALL women who want to breastfeed, but particularly those giving birth in the hospital system because it offers a gentle alternative to help women AVOID the most common and painful breastfeeding complications.

But it’s more than just the technique on how to get a good latch. It is that, but it’s so much more...

Got a Question?

First time mom, 3 weeks postpartum. My baby doesn’t latch from day one because of that I am not BF. And did not pump so my supply is very low now. Can I join the program now, will it help me with successful breastfeeding and increase in supply or it’s too late to join the course.

Hi Tashu, thanks for your question and I am sorry to hear things have been challenging for you. It's important to acknowledge that every woman and her baby are unique. By implementing some key principles of The Thompson Method, it is possible to overcome existing breastfeeding challenges. However, in more complex and/or acute circumstances a one on one Breastfeeding Rescue may be more appropriate (in your case this might be a better option - https://www.thethompsonmethod.com/breastfeeding-rescue). It's a very gentle and gradual process to overcome breastfeeding complications that may take time and patience, but as I mentioned it is unique for every woman and her baby. For some reassurance, here is a link to some stories from women who have had supply challenges and overcame them using The Thompson Method. https://www.thethompsonmethod.com/supply-issues-success-stories Wishing you all the best, Warmest regards, Joanne Thompson

First time mother here. My baby boy is due in February and i’m wondering if anyone has tips when it comes to being adamant at the hospital about using this method? I want to be sure I am doing everything right and don’t let the hospital overstep.

Hello Lovely, I did a couple of things. I used the birth plan template and told my doctors what I wanted weeks before, such as using the Thompson Method for Breastfeeding, delayed cord clamping, and having an uninterrupted 3 Golden hours. I made sure to reiterate what I wanted every week and then again when I was in the hospital. I made sure to speak up if they tried to use other methods or put their hands on me to show me what to do. Just say, please do not touch I am using the Thompson Method and I got this. You got this!

Hi love, yes my second born was the most healing birth experience I could ever ask for thanks to Dr Robyn and this program. I made my birth plan consisting of a page or two of the things most important to my wants and wishes for myself and my baby. And made my Dr sit down beside me and read it and then sign it. I then notified the nurse manager of my past trauma with me eldest and she made sure I was connected with the kindest most natural nurse available. She also read my birth plan and signed it and we posted it on the door of the hospital to read, then knock and wait. I labored and birthed my baby on my hands and knees while my Dr sat beside me hands off. Nothing was done without permission first, even though my Dr almost slipped up. My 3 golden hours were respected without lactation or forced help from the nurses. Everyone left my room and it was absolutely beautiful I cried. And I refused help when we were being discharged because I already knew how to gently cradle my baby and that this was correct and painfree❤️ You will do amazing!

I am having twins, does The Thompson Method work for twins?
Asked by Simone (3 years ago)
Thanks for your question Simone. The key principles of The Thompson Method apply with single babies as well as twins, however Dr Robyn does offers additional information for women expecting twins. There are a number of twins mums in the Breastfeeding Club (Our private 24/7 support community for members). In fact, one of our amazing Admins has 3 sets of twins!! When you join The Thompson Method Online Breastfeeding Course you’ll have access to expert education and just as importantly you’ll be able to ask specific questions in the breastfeeding club.
The admin team will work through any challenges with you and refer your question to one of regular live Q&A sessions if need be. Here's a link to some Thompson Method breastfeeding success stories from twin mums! https://www.thethompsonmethod.com/twins-success-stories

Does your method work for women having a c-section?
Asked by Jody (3 years ago)
It’s a great question! The Thompson Method Breastfeeding Course covers every step from prenatal to birthing your baby right up to returning to work. There is a special section specifically targeted towards planned and emergency c sections and what to do in the event you are separated from your baby.

We even help you prepare your birth and breastfeeding plan. You’ll know how to ask the right questions, learn how to protect your 3 golden hours and know your rights when it comes to you and your baby.

Preparation is the key to successful and pain-free breastfeeding. If you do purchase the breastfeeding course you'll gain access to this information for a lifetime.  There are no time constraints so you have access to the online video content at any time and for as long as you need; even for future babies!  You'll also gain immediate membership to the Breastfeeding Club with 24/7 guidance and support.
For some extra reassurance perhaps you might like to read stories from our members who have had a successful breastfeeding journey using The Thompson Method after a c-section. https://thompsonmethod.com/csection
