I have been wanting a hand grinder for a while and although the Comandante was a dream it always felt out of reach in regards to the cost. I already have a Fellow Ode electric grinder and the Comandante was a ‘would love’ as opposed to ‘a need’.
Well those sneaky people at Coffee Hit send a Secret Pre-order email through and I know the Comandante has been out of stock for ages, so my desire for one of these couldn’t be contained any longer.
The Fellow Ode is a great grinder, and I use my Sage Precision Brewer a lot which I grind 60g for 1L of brew.
I also have really got into pour overs, so have bought various V60 drippers and Kalita Wave and with these I use a lot less coffee as you know, so the Comandante can grind Max of around 45g in one go, so for all V60 and such I use the Comandante to grind for these as the Fellow Ode I find a bit messy, and with small amounts of coffee I thought it would be easier to hand grind.
Well the actual grinder is lovely to use, so well built and smooth it’s a delight to grind with, and so easy to clean between uses.
It comes with 2 glass containers, and on mine I use the darker brown with the grinder and the clear one I use to weigh the beans on my scale and then place the top of the grinder on the glass and then tip over, so it’s really easy to pour the beans in and none ever jump out or spill.
It is just so therapeutic to grind by hand, and you feel nicely involved in the process of producing the components to create your brew.
After grinding I remove the dark glass container from the Comandante and then brush around the burrs to remove any mess, and tap over the sink to clear any bits and then the grinder is always ready for its next job all nice and clean.
I haven’t tried any finer grind with it, for espresso, but have heard it is good for this and also you can upgrade the adjuster to a ‘Red Clix’ which gives it much finer settings to dial in for espresso, but I cannot see myself doing this as I only use the Comandante for Filter / Drip.
I think this grinder should last for many many years, which I am glad at because I am so pleased I got it and think it is a beautiful addition to my coffee brewing obsession so I do highly recommend it, should you be able to justify the quite high price.
Incidentally the quality of the grind and the minuscule grind retention is absolutely superb, so like I say I think it is a great grinder and the service from Coffee Hit was excellent, although if they keep sending me emails with details of equipment I will have no room left in my kitchen.
