This is my third NTH sub. I have a Barracuda and had sold a Näcken before. Both are very solid watches. But when I saw the NTH/WatchGecko collaboration with the Näcken and Amphion, I was really excited!
When I was a very young US Army Warrant Officer in Vietnam, I bought a Rolex GMT Master in 1971. It was a great watch, especially in 1971. The things I loved about that GMT Master were its size, the cyclops date window, and its simple readability. With the new NTH/WatchGecko offerings, I could recapture both as well as adding features. Things like an anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal, solid end links on the bracelet, the exceptional readability and lume on both handsets (especially the Näcken!), all exceed the specs on my old GMT Master. I don’t recall what it’s maximum depth limit was but I’m pretty sure it was much less than 300m. Throw in a modern, Miyota automatic movement with a date and the cyclops window, all for a fraction of the price of either a Tudor or a Rolex and you have a very compelling design!
The only real difficulty I had was deciding whether to buy the Näcken or the Amphion. In the end, the snowflake hands won out and I selected the Näcken in Admiral Blue on bracelet. The blue is wonderfully done, very dark, and capable of changing shades depending on the ambient light. The hour markers, hands, second hand, and 12 o’clock pip on the rotating bezel all glow a brilliant green in the dark. The watch is very well finished, all done to the standard you expect from NTH and WatchGecko.
I am very satisfied with my new Näcken. I find it to be an excellent watch for work (still flying helicopters) or play. It has all the design features I loved from my old Rolex as well as some references to modern Tudors, all a price that is much more comfortable and, as they say, “without the hype or expense!”
