Kia ora, it has been an amazing event to have and to share the resources amongst the students of Riverton Primary Juniors and Seniors. We started with an amazing morning, gathering in separate teams. Our Junior team set off towards the beach entry from our school end and gradually ended up by the Riverton Rugby fields. I met up with them to collect all the rubbish bags, they set off at 9:30 am till 11:45 am, then slowly walked back to school ready for a school music production. The Seniors, however, tracked all the township area and the combined streets of the township. Room 8 my class started towards our Aparima College than the field and eventually we hit a jackpot of rubbish being dumped behind the bushes, collecting two huge bags full, leaving this on the side of the road for pick up later, the other two classrooms, went further to the other end of us and in the middle meeting at a certain point at 11 am at the town park. My students were very annoyed that we had collected that much rubbish and knew that our shellfish and kai moana were at risk of pollution due to rubbish blowing in their hometown, situated near the ocean and estuary. Students were getting honks from drive-bys and praised by the local community. We eventually had morning tea and then ventured off towards the meet-up place by the park, and gathered everyones rubbish collection at the corner of the parking area. We were shocked to see the amount of rubbish dumped for pick up later. A little play at the park and then back to school. After the Music production which started at noon. After the show was completed, I gathered all the classroom Juniors and Seniors to come and see the amount of rubbish they collected out side the hall area and they were even shocked by even more rubbish collected by the Junior classes. This was an eye opener to the staff and parents who were already at the school, who also came to help pack it all up with Room 8 students.
