This 29cm Storm Glass Barometer with Wooden Base makes a wonderful unique unusual gift for those who love something that is not only useful but also a little quirky!This admiral Fitzroy storm glass is a barometer that come into general use in the early 1700s.  Sailors would attach this instrument to their mast on their ships and then rely upon it to forecast either good weather or poor conditions at sea.  Admiral Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865) was commander of the HMS Beagle and also participated in the Charles Darwin expedition (1834-1836) and in that time conducted a detailed study of the storm glass.  He refined the chemical formulation and published observation guidelines as below:Clear Liquid - Bright and clear weatherCloudy liquid sometimes with small stars and crystals at the top - Cloudy weather and often predicts thunderstorms and rain.Small dots in the liquid - Humid or Foggy WeatherLarge Flaky Crystal - Cloudy skies, snow in winterThreads of crystals at the top - Windy WeatherCrystals at the bottom - frost maybe comingIt really is a mystery how this barometer works but it is believed that electromagnetic changes in the weather patterns activate the crystals inside.Full instructions on how to use your Storm Glass Barometer are included.29cm Storm Glass Barometer with Wooden Base Measures 29cm Tall and comes with a wooden display base.**Please note this item should be handled with care and kept out of reach of children as it contains flammable liquid therefore should be kept away from combustible material.  In case of breakage clean the spilt liquid with warm water and mild soap.**29cm

We have a Galileo thermometer the same size and thought they would look good together. They do. It's a bit too early to comment on the accuracy though as it needs a few weeks to settle down apparently.

This was bought as a gift for someone who has a modern weather station to show how things 'used to be done' :) It arrived on time and well packaged.

Only took it out of the box to check it as it is a gift but it looked fine.

I have not found the ideal place for this item yet but I am looking forward to observing the changes once the liquid has had chance to settle in its final position in the house.
