Sailors would attach this instrument to their mast on their ships and then rely upon it to forecast either good weather or poor conditions at sea. Admiral Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865) was commander of the HMS Beagle and also participated in the Charles Darwin expedition (1834-1836) and in that time conducted a detailed study of the storm glass.
