I purchased a 19 year old Pegoretti aluminum frame (8:30 AM) to try out for a while and was very impressed with the smoother than expected ride combined with the ability to stand on the pedals for a quick sprint to make it through changing stoplights at intersections. I decided to invest in a new steel Duende frame that was available in a pretty neat stock polka dotted finish called Mezza Tazza. I am the type of rider that prefers to ride what I build as assembling quality components to a great frame is a very rewarding experience. When you assemble a bike you really can see the quality of this Pegoretti frame first hand. I used a magnet to determine that the rear dropouts, bottom bracket shell, rear brake bridge and all of the attached cable guides are non magnetic stainless steel. The main tubes are Columbus ZONA chromoly and are magnetic. Bottom bracket threads were perfect and everything went together with no chipped paint or unusual tolerances for the headset and seatpost. You can't feel any lumps through the paint finish over the graphics either. The TIG (tungston inert gas) welds are so finely done it is hard to tell that they are simple fillet welds. I don't think this level of workmanship could be any better at any price. The ride compares with the older 8:30 AM frame, but is even smoother. I added almost 1/2 mph on my short ride of 14 miles and 900 feet of climbing so am very pleased with this bike. The stainless frame details will contribute to making this frame last a very long time.
