“The book of James covers a multitude of themes. It’s written for those whose faith in God is constantly threatened by struggle and hardship. However, James sees these testing and trials as leading to growth and maturity and perseverance, which he implies are also worthy goals for Christians. So it’s no wonder that the color themes of Alabaster’s James is between the red, orange, and yellow spectrum. These colors can symbolize hardship and pain, but they can also symbolize the sense of warmth and hope that the book of James has. The book of James also speaks about wealth and oppression and material things not lasting and how the rich can be unjust with their wealth. And so the images of flames and valleys and deserts take on a whole new meaning--an eerie warning about the futility of wealth, and how we get tested in our own deserts.
I enjoy reading from the Alabaster James Bible because I can let my imagination run wild with some of the images accompanied to help me reflect on James and what they mean to me. They help me connect with God in a creative sense. They also challenge me to reflect on the kind of person I want to be and how I'll react in the face of my own trials and tests.
