We used this for ear flare-ups for at least 7 years...particularly just before and after grooming. It worked. We didn’t ever question using it as needed. Then, one evening two days after grooming, we did our usual treatment. Within a few hours, our dog was acting strangely. He did not come when called and seemed lost and confused in our small back yard. The next day I noticed that he no longer reacted to very loud noises. One being an aluminum can with pennies in it that used to absolutely terrify him if we even gently bumped it. He had very sensitive hearing. We used to show off his trick of us barely whispering “food” either as he slept or with our lips hidden and he would hear it and fly to the food dish. I literally shook the can in his face and he did not respond at all. He only sniffed the can as I held it in front of him. Not only did he not hear it, but he didn’t seem to even recognize what it was. We took him to the vet and were told that unfortunately, our dog was one of the small percentage who suddenly lose their hearing after using Mometamax. Out of the blue. Within hours. No warning. No real hope for recovery. His biological brother was fine and had no reaction. The vet reported it to the FDA. It kills me to know that I administered the cause of my dog’s deafness. I am not recommending that others don’t use this. I just want people to be aware that using this drug could have consequences that you may regret for the rest of your life. We never looked at other options because this worked and who would have thought that a few drops could change so much. Our dog was 9 at the time. He was developing cataracts, so his vision was somewhat impaired and then his hearing was suddenly gone. He was so confused. Now, he has learned to rely on his brother, but he has not ever really been his usual self since. Please be aware that this side effect is real and vets know about it, but may not mention it. Maybe at least consider if there might be some other option and make an informed choice.
