About the Plant:
Copaiba essential oil comes from copaiba trees that naturally produce copaiba oil resin. The oil resin is extracted from the trunk by piercing a hole in the tree. A pipe is inserted into the tree, which allows the resin to flow out. The essential oil is extracted from the resin using the steam distillation process.
Where it Grows:
There are more than 70 species of copaiba trees. Many grow in Central and South America, especially Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. Amrita® Aromatherapy is proud to receive Certified Organic Copaiba Essential Oil from Brazil.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
The main compound found in copaiba essential oil is beta-caryophyllene, an anti-inflammatory agent that also has pain-killing (analgesic) properties. Beta-caryophyllene is a molecule that also interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the skin, causing the skin cells to produce beta-endorphin--one of the happiness hormones.
The resin is used as a food additive and as a flavoring agent in food and beverages. It's also used in perfumery, cosmetics, varnishes, and lacquers.

Copaiba is believed to induce neuroprotection by modulating the inflammatory response following acute damage to the central nervous system. As a pain reliever, it helps block the detection of a painful stimulus by the sensory neurons and shows a peripheral and central pain-relieving effect. Excellent for headaches and migraines.
Copaiba is known for its abilities to help heal skin blemishes, acne, scars, skin irritations, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, wounds, and lesions with its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibacterial effects. Copaiba causes the skin to produce beta-endorphin, one of the happiness hormones, due to large amounts of the beta-caryophyllene present in the oil, which interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the skin. The oil also aids in tightening and firming skin, helping to reduce sagging and wrinkles. It's used in cosmetics such as soaps, lotions, shampoos, and perfumes and may be added to personal cosmetics and skincare products.
