About the Plant:
The universally popular orange is one of the most cultivated fruits in the world. Bright, cheerful oranges grow on evergreen trees in warm areas of America and in other sub-tropical regions in the world. Evergreen citrus trees grow to be about 30 feet tall and have shiny, smooth and oblong leaves, with beautiful white flowers.
The fruit has a sweet pulp and non-bitter membranes. It's enjoyed for breakfast, snacks and as flavoring all around the world. It takes around 1,000 peels of oranges to make about 20 ounces of essential oil. Imagine how much orange juice you could squeeze with that many oranges!
Where It Grows:
During the 15th century, the sweet orange was introduced into the forest regions of West Africa and Europe by Portuguese travelers who brought them back from Macao, China. Today, it is cultivated especially in the Americas and the Mediterranean region. Amrita Aromatherapy is proud to receive Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil from Mexico.
Traditional Uses and Lore:
The sweet orange that we know and love today arrived in Europe from China in the 16th (other books say different dates) century with Arabian travelers and later to the Americas and West Indies by Christopher Columbus. The Chinese doctors used orange peels for coughs, colds and anorexia.*
In the rest of the world the sweet orange wasn’t commonly used therapeutically, because it was considered rare and expensive, but around the 17th century people started using it medicinally.* These days, orange essential oil is one of the least expensive oils on the market and used for many different emotional and physical conditions!*
Folk remedies of the Mediterranean region used the healing properties of Sweet Orange Essential Oil to treat a variety of conditions, from the common cold, to skin infections and spasms.* In China, the Sweet Orange is believed to symbolize good fortune, which makes them not only a well-used ingredient in medicine, but also in traditional offerings and gifts.*
Other Facts:

Scent: Sweet, Warm, Sunny, and Citrusy
Fragrance Note: Top Note
Composition: Limonene
Family: Rutaceae Family

Dr. Streicher Says:
Pesticides are commonly oil soluble bit not water soluble.* Since citrus oils are not steam distilled but cold pressed pesticides tend to end up in the oil. We therefore strongly recommend to use organic citrus oils and not those from conventional farming. For orange, the price difference between the conventional and the organic is rather small.* Amrita therefore carries only the certified organic quality.
