I bought this a few years ago and twice I tried to cook the bean mixture thinking that's all there was to the Chili mix. I even tried to put it in with our homemade pinto beans. Needless to say, it didn't taste too good. I was planning on tossing the whole can, when my husband started to re-read the instructions and dug around the bottom of the can and discovered the spices in a Mylar reseal-able bag just yesterday, underneath the bean mixture totally invisible when you open the can! So we cooked up a batch and I have to say it's the best tasting Chili I've ever had! Could you please find a way to put the spices on top of the beans when you pack this product up, so someone else won't make this stupid mistake when they open the can? Thanks!

Have prepared for visiting guests, kids, and camping trips. Guests enjoyed the flavor. Kids LOVED it. Camping: Everyone loved it: flavor and all but then we were starving by the end day ;). (I did add instant rice to backpacking portion to make it more filling for hiking needs.) My opinion: great chili flavor but a bit strong so I added 1 tsp of tomato puree powder per serving to give it more tomato zest, and BOY, did that do the trick: makes a very good chili taste fantastic! Try that little trick. (Other than mentioned above, I didn't add anything else, so just play around with your own flavor preferences.) Backpacking tip food preparation: add 1 cup of hot water to chili to reconstitute well and wait about 10-20 minutes (set up camp, chat,) and then add remaining boiling water. If you don't you may be eating some chewy chili. A good deal and would definitely recommend. 4 stars because I believe this chili needs a bit more tomato flavor.

VG! The only thing I would add is more partially hydrogenated oils. An extra gluten variety would be something I'd want to buy.

Dint care much for this. Received 3 everyday cans in a monthly kit. Cooked one an as directed. While it's edible, I don't like it much. Too salty, too thin. I can fix the thin by adding less water, say half what the instructions say. Perhaps with cooked ground beef added and cheese melted on top it will be better. May try that with one of my 2 remaining cans. In an emergency situation I may have an entirely different outlook on how this tastes. Butt for now I do not intend to buy any more of this. There are enough other things I like that I plan on storing instead.

I only wish you guys did not use partially hydrogenated oils in your foods; that's why 4 stars. Other than that, it is very good. I have tasted this in the smaller can and am buying #10 cans for emergency storage. This is an item I would use more often if it did not have partially hydrogenated oil in it (same goes for many other items...I would use them more for everyday use if no hydrogenated oils).

Just got 3 of these shipped to me. Flavor wasnt bad, required almost twice the water the can said it required. There was what I thought was supposed to be a separate bag for the flavoring, however in the can I opened the bag was already opened and mixed. Made the chili and with some sour cream and cheese it was decent. Will order again but I will have to be very hungry to want to eat it plain.
