“I am very happy with the final results. Unlimited hot water for a shower, and for however many showers the two showers it serves can cycle people through. I am 70 years old, and can do work like this about 4 hours a day. It took me about 4 times as long to replace as it would have a replacement gas water heater. I replaced a heater in the attic, I rigged a a little chain hoist to get the old one out, and the new tankless heater in, so that was smooth, but time consuming. I had to rework the gas supply coming to the area of the attic from 3/8 for the old heater to the 3/4 required for the new heater. Water in and out had to be rerouted to service the bottom of the tankless heater. The roof vent had to be cut out to a larger size, and the roof reflashed and sealed. It is a little tricky to get the heater mounted low enough with a sloping roof to route the intake/outflow air vent to a good venting position. The new heater is mounted on a "wall", so I had to construct a "wall" mounting area in the attic. Not difficult with a couple of 2x6'a and a piece of 3/4" plywood, but time consuming. I have been a pretty good handyman plumber through the years, and generally did all my own plumbing work. This tankless unit was new to me so I was trying to be very careful working from the instructions, and not past experiences with regular gas water heaters. There is a lot of information in the instructions, but it seems to be poorly organized, and jumps around a lot. It is kind of hard to explain how 40 pages of instructions can make it difficult to find information on the unit. What I needed was probably in there some where, but I read the manual from cover to cover several times, and some things I never found. An example would be information on the DIP switches. There are a couple of places in the manual for DIP switch setting on vent configuration, elevation adjustment, and water temperature adjustment. That covers 4 of the 10 DIP switches. There is another sheet of schematics on the inside cover of the unit for another DIP switch, but in general, the rest are ignored. Just an example of the subtle difference between well done instructions and those that really need improvement.
All in all, I got it done, and am very happy with the final outcome, and an installation job that is well done. No shortcuts, but lots of trips to the store, and lots of time to make the conversion. It took me about 16 hours (4 days x 4 hours per day) from start to finish, counting store trips.”
