“Attracting our Downy, Hairy, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers meant inviting a hoard of Starlings. We did all the easy things, including switching to all safflower seed and using an upside-down suet feeder (no problem for Starlings). As winter turned to spring, I discovered this novel feeder. We used spreadable Bark Butter inside the "suet sandwich," and used 3/4" masking tape to be margin mindful. Even though this is designed for bigger woodpeckers, only Downys were regular users. The Starlings could get some of the Bark Butter, not a lot. I take this as a win.”
“Easy to fill, very sturdy and heavier than expected. Several woodpeckers and nuthatches already grabbing snacks from it. The starlings land on top and can’t get any suet, but I did leave the last 3/4 inch or so empty. If I had put suet to the end they would get some.”
